I spent a year around people building crypto games. And the thing that separated the ones who made it from the ones who didn't wasn't talent. It wasn't funding. It wasn't even timing. It was what they thought they were building. The ones who failed always started with the token. The economy. The whitepaper. They'd spend months designing yield curves and staking mechanisms and reward loops before they'd designed a single moment of fun. They weren't making games. They were making financial instruments with a play button. And players could feel it immediately. You'd load in and the whole thing felt like a spreadsheet wearing a costume. Every mechanic was just a thin layer over "here's how you make money." The gameplay wasn't the point. It was the packaging. The ones who actually survived? They started with something embarrassingly simple. Is this fun if you take the money away? That's it. That was the whole filter. And almost nobody passed it. Because the money was the entire pitch. For context, a strategy game is about decision-making. You win by planning ahead, managing resources, reading your opponent, and understanding how one move affects the next.
