There has been a rapid expansion in growing crops to produce biomethane as cleaner alternative to fossil fuels to help reach #NetZero But cultivating maize on drained peat emits 3x more #CO2 than it avoids by not using natural #gas says new @UK_CEH study: ceh.ac.uk/press/growing-…

@AndreasHeinem @UK_CEH @CO2REhub Also running some microcosm experiments…with some rhizometers. Too much to do and not enough time, I think I’ve got enough work to last me another 30 years 😂 funding permitting of course 🫣

@AndreasHeinem @UK_CEH @CO2REhub We are measuring the annual carbon balance with eddy covariance, so will capture this. Litter traps will go out to quantify inputs and static chamber measurements will be used too.

@EcoRhymes @UK_CEH @CO2REhub Interesting, but will you consider 'priming' the turnover of peat (decomposition) by mycorrhizal roots and easily decomposable leaf litter? Willow likely can be quite 'active' underground, even in wet soils ...

@photo_cj @UK_CEH @CO2REhub It will all be harvested in three years time, end product yet to be determined. I better practice my willow weaving skills!

@EcoRhymes @UK_CEH @CO2REhub Blimey! They have a machine to put a stick in the mud! Will any of the grown willow be harvested? Basket weaving is in revival

Thank you for the invite @DefraSoils. It was great to talk about our #palidiculture #biochar project in York. Lots of great discussions 🙌
Defra Soils & Peat@DefraSoils

Thanks to everyone who joined us in York for the third in our series of lowland workshops, discussing #peat and #sustainable #agriculture in Yorkshire, and in particular Jenny Rhymes @EcoRhymes @UK_CEH for her presentation about the #biochar #paludiculture project.
