A true NYC showdown on the streets of Astoria—here we have an American kestrel taking on a hawk!! The hawk was like nah bro go away and the kestrel had no choice but to listen 😂

I wish I still had before photos in my phone, but this area was essentially covered in multi flora rose and craaaazy vines! Now the native plants have space to grow. 🥲

About a year ago, I left my job as an arborist working on an Alley Pond restoration project to pursue a career in science education. I visited the site today, and I am amazed at how the park looks! Hopefully NYC Parks can get more funding to restore the rest of the park!

(This photo was taken on our first birding outing 7 years ago. Thank you for everything, César. 😔)

An incredibly kind person and a phenomenal birder, César Castillo, passed away earlier this week. César was the person who opened my world up to birds. Please consider donating to a gofundme to help his wife and kids with medical and living costs: gofundme.com/f/support-wend…

It’s true—dolphins were spotted in the Bronx River this week! This is great news—it shows that the decades-long effort to restore the river as a healthy habitat is working. We believe these dolphins naturally found their way to the river in search of fish. (Video: Nick Banco)

My favorite part of this time of year is seeing how desperate my school gets with soliciting evaluations A) They made the email subject "grade" to get me to open it B) They're trying to gaslight me by saying that my professors are grading me, so I should grade them 😂

Professors be like “I’m making the due date before the end of the semester so that there isn’t a mad rush to finish everything” Yes but now you’re moving the mad rush INTO THE SEMESTER which is when we still have classes & we have less time for schoolwork! make it make sense 🤡

@mwtingley Honestly, I did not understand the purpose of the loud music at the closing reception. It's the last night; obviously everyone wants to talk to each other! And the inner area was so crowded...

Wow, this is appalling. As scientists, conferences should be upholding at the very least mandatory masking. #AOS_BC_22 had mandatory masking and I am very thankful for it!
Johanna@JohannaJantzen

I will not be attending #Botany2022 in person mainly due to the lack of COVID protections. Recommending hand washing for an airborne virus, not requiring masks, and requiring attendees to sign a waiver that you accept the risk of spreading (and contracting) COVID??

Such an amazing bird walk this morning in San Juan! Pictured here is a lovely Puerto Rican woodpecker that was posing for us—but my favorite bird by far was the frigatebird!

@EcologistAmanda Very cool. Good luck with your talk. I’m not there but will look forward to future papers etc. from your work. We’re doing work on rivers and birds and insects out here in LA - so, very interested in all the things you mentioned.

Obviously an owl in a very obvious location in nyc is going to be surrounded by people regardless, but there is still something to be said for not broadcasting the location? 👀

@McmackinRebecca This is so neat! Now I know that every single egg case I’ve noticed has been a Chinese mantis, which is good to know I suppose!

Best part: a handy guide for IDing ootheca for removal. It is VERY HARD. This makes it easy(er).
