"J.R. Richard had the greatest stuff I have ever seen and it still gives me goosebumps to think of what he might have become." Joe Morgan. Richard held opposing batters to the lowest batting average in the league in 1976, 1978 and 1979. Selected as the All-Star starter in 1980, he was leading the league in wins, strikeouts, ERA and shutouts when he was stricken by a career- ending stroke, caused by a blood clot in his neck. Richard had a 107-71 record with a 3.15 ERA and 76 complete games for the Astros. He won 18 or more games in four straight seasons (1976-79). In 1978, he became the first Astros pitcher to reach 300 strikeouts in a season with 303, a record he broke the following season with 313 strikeouts. When stricken, he was clearly the most dominating pitcher in the National League, with a fastball exceeding 100 mph and a slider that zipped in at 92 mph.
