None of my students wanted to talk about Nashville today. Instead we talked about career plans, selling a pickup, what a mortgage is, and getting along with siblings. #1 advisor-advisee relationship rule: make sure they know you care. NB you must actually care.

If you've been teaching a long time, you have a probably under-utilized resource: former students. Invite them to Zoom into your classroom so they can talk to current students. Bonus points if you're in a small town and their younger siblings/babysittees are in your class.
