I just want to say, for all those applying to PhD programs now in computational and systems biology: I would never have been admitted if I were to apply today. I don't even think I'd earn an interview. You are incredible and admission is not a judgement on your awesomeness.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Congratulations to this year’s recipients of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) 2025 Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research: Dr. @AbdelWahablab, of @MSKCancerCenter; Dr. Andrea Ablasser, of @EPFL_en; and Dr. @cncurtis, of @StanfordMed. The prize, named in honor of MSK’s past President Emeritus, the late Paul Marks, recognizes a new generation of leaders who are making significant contributions to the understanding of cancer or are improving the treatment of the disease. A special thanks as usual to our labs and to the patients and their families who contributed to this work.

They also open up an exciting line of inquiry into rRNA mutations themselves, the phenotypes of which we are only beginning to understand.

Together with @mito_oncogene, today we report in Nature Genetics a peculiar + exciting discovery: positive selection of mutations to mitochondrial ribosomal RNA in cancer. Led by Sonia Boscenco, Jacqueline Tait-Mulder, and Minsoo Kim nature.com/articles/s4158…

@flamholz Addendum: I, being the silly person I am, assumed the original Harvard Theory Lunch was no longer running. And I, as usual, was mistaken. Ours is less a revival now but no less inspired :)

The rumors are true: there is a revival of the famous Harvard Systems Biology Theory Lunch in New York, co-organized by @flamholz and I. There is food. There is chalk. There is science. It's been fun. More to come, please reach out if you'd like to attend.

More so than any other project our lab has worked on, we are indebted to the patients whose clinical care resulted in these data. And we are especially grateful to the small but vibrant (and growing) community of cachexia scientists that showed us the way through.

We integrate all of these findings to build a first-of-its-kind model of the impending risk of cachexia in patients from two diseases. Huge potential to power prospective randomized trials with high-risk patients.

Today we're releasing a preprint describing the incidence, physiology + molecular features of cachexia in 60,000 MSK patients. A herculean effort by Venise Jan Castillon, Amy Xie, and our whole lab. medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
