Maurice Kamto, president of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party, has launched an online platform to petition against the recent amendment of the Constitution reintroducing the post of vice president. Kamto argues that the decision by parliament, pending ratification, contravenes Article 64 of the Constitution. Therefore, he has asked Cameroonians to sign an online petition denouncing this. “NO to the constitutional revision establishing a negotiated presidential succession through the creation of a post of Vice-President of the Republic, appointed with the right of succession in the event of a vacancy in the Presidency of the Republic, in violation of Article 64 of the Constitution,” the statement on the platform reads. “NO to the repeated extensions of Members of Parliament’s terms, in violation of Article 15(4) of the Constitution. NO to the repeated extensions of municipal councillors’ terms based on the manipulation of the electoral law in its provisions limiting the duration of the extension.” He believes this is the best way Cameroonians can express their frustrations with the adopted bill. “WE DEMAND COMPLIANCE WITH THE CONSTITUTION, THE FUNDAMENTAL LAW OF OUR COUNTRY, AND RESPECT FOR THE SOVEREIGNTY OF THE CAMEROONIAN PEOPLE, AS EXPRESSED THROUGH ELECTIONS. Let our voices be heard,” he said. At the time of this publication, the platform had received over 5,000 signatures.
