@awindywalker @FFmpeg you want it to be as fast as possible if you're running it on millions, if not billions, of videos, that 1ms can add up quite fast you want to not only be able to run in realtime, but faster than realtime. the sooner you're done encoding something the sooner you can move on

@FFmpeg can you explain for the dumb people amongst us (me included) why an encoder/decoder needs to be real-time? may be point me to something to read? I'm guessing based on what you said in OP that it's not just file conversion but there is timed conversion of a stream with snapshots?

This is the reason FFmpeg is not written in a Garbage Collected language. We can't just stall for a few milliseconds. Also unlike gaming which can just lag and reduce FPS, video (de)compression must maintain real-time to have smooth video. 1ms is a lot but it isn't at the same time.
Sebastian Aaltonen@SebAaltonen

Same is true for time. 1ms is a lot in real-time software. 120Hz displays (new phones) = 8.33ms budget. 1ms = 12% of your whole budget. I remember an old article saying that garbage collection is a solved problem, because it just takes couple of milliseconds...

Starting in 2027, smartphones sold in the European Union will be required to have user-replaceable batteries designed for greater durability and more charging cycles. Manufacturers must also provide spare parts and repair manuals for at least 10 years after a model is released. This is real pressure against planned obsolescence. It should mean phones that actually last longer, cheaper fixes, and a lot less electronic waste piling up. About time.
