Last week, two local heroes were recognized at an Edina City Council meeting with Citizens Awards for their extraordinary actions during a life-threatening emergency at Southdale YMCA. Back in January, Lifeguard James Parker spotted a swimmer face down in the pool and immediately pulled him to safety. Another staff member, Brian Myers, quickly joined to assist. Together, they determined the swimmer was suffering from a cardiac event. They began CPR, applied an automated external defibrillator (AED) and provided rescue breaths until first responders arrived. Upon arrival, police officers confirmed the swimmer was in full cardiac arrest with no pulse and not breathing. Paramedic/firefighters arrived shortly after; the AED advised a shock, which was delivered. A pulse returned, the patient began breathing independently, regained consciousness and was transported to the hospital. James and Brian's calm, coordinated and courageous actions made all the difference. We thank them for stepping up when it mattered most! Read more about the awards: bit.ly/4v7id1B.

Routine maintenance work will be performed on an emergency siren located near 7405 Gleason Road between between noon–3 p.m. Thursday, March 5. Once new equipment is installed, crews will conduct a brief “growl test,” which is not a full siren activation. During the growl test, the siren will emit a short, low growling sound for less than a few minutes to confirm it is working properly. Neighbors nearby may briefly hear the sound.
