"With this second issue, we continue the essential task of publishing work that forms the foundation of the field and furthers its development. As UAP move further into the structured discourse of academic scholarship, they take on more nuanced, subtle, and complex resonances, shaped by their conceptual, phenomenological, and experiential dimensions." - Michael Cifone, Editor-in-Chief, Limina Journal of UAP Studies The latest edition of the Limina Journal of UAP Studies is now online for reference and download! limina.uapstudies.org/f/publication-…

Michael Cifone is interested in what he calls "the empirical weird," phenomena that defy easy explanation. He leads a group of researchers who say it's time for academia to get serious about studying UFOs. My latest @USATODAY story. usatoday.com/story/news/nat…

From E.T. to GPTs: How ‘Aliens’ figure in our narratives In a new feature from DW Akademie, Dr. Christian Peters, Advisory Council member of the Society for UAP Studies and Managing Director of the International Graduate School of Social Sciences at the University of Bremen, explores how our representations of the alien evolve alongside shifting cultural, political, and technological anxieties. From Cold War fears to ecological dread, from colonial legacies to the rise of artificial intelligence, Peters argues that the alien has always mirrored the “others” we construct — the limits by which we define what counts as human, rational, or known. “The way that the technology we have invented actually comes to the end that it produces—that’s a historically new situation,” Peters observes. “AI is very alien.” In tracing the line from postwar flying saucers to today’s “alien” intelligences in AI, the article highlights how the UFO and UAP serve not only as symbols of the unknown, but also as mirrors of ourselves and our deepest uncertainties about belonging, difference, and agency. The Society for UAP Studies is pleased to share the announcement of the inaugural lecture in the new “Investigating Non-Human Intelligence” series, hosted by the HumanI nstitute and @UAPMed. The opening lecture on November 7th, 2025 will feature Dr. Michael Cifone, philosopher of science and Executive Director of the Society for UAP Studies, who will present a critical framework for approaching the possible existence of non-human intelligence (NHI) through rigorous scientific inquiry. Rather than presupposing that such intelligences exist, this lecture asks a deeper question: What would it take—scientifically, methodologically, and institutionally—to even pose the question of non-human intelligence rigorously? Dr. Cifone will explore: • How existing scientific paradigms might adapt to study possible NHI. • The challenge of defining “intelligence” and “non-human” beyond anthropocentric bias. • How interdisciplinary collaboration can help establish credible methodologies. • What forms of data—instrumental, testimonial, biological—could support an evidentiary framework. This lecture inaugurates an important conversation on how science, philosophy, and institutional design can together shape a new frontier in the responsible study of intelligence beyond the human. Join us for our next Community Reading Circle session, where we will explore a new work on how UFO culture and myth-making influenced public belief in the extraordinary: The Saucerian: UFOs, Men in Black, and the Unbelievable Life of Gray Barker by Gabriel Mckee. In this fascinating new release from The MIT Press, McKee tells the story of Gray Barker (1925–1984), an eccentric writer and publisher whose imprint Saucerian Books helped shape UFO and paranormal culture in mid-twentieth-century America. Through Barker’s life and legacy, The Saucerian explores how self-publishing, mass-media experimentation, and imaginative myth-making gave rise to enduring icons such as the Men in Black and the Mothman, showing how these stories blurred the boundaries between belief, entertainment, and conspiracy. As a recent contribution to the UAP field, The Saucerian offers a timely opportunity to engage with fresh scholarship that connects the early UFO movement to today’s media-driven fascination with the unexplained. McKee’s thoughtful examination of Barker’s career invites reflection on how stories of the anomalous continue to shape our collective imagination. Gabriel McKee is a scholar, writer, and librarian whose work explores the intersection of religion, science, and speculative thought in modern culture. He serves at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at New York University and holds master’s degrees in theological studies and library and information science. The author of The Gospel According to Science Fiction, McKee offers a unique perspective on how spiritual and mythic ideas take shape through popular media and the modern search for meaning. Mark your calendar and join us for this session: Date: Saturday, November 15th Time: 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM EST Location: Online via Google Meets societyforuapstudies.org/community-read… Between sessions, we encourage you to join the Community Reading Circle Group on the Society’s website, where members can continue the conversation, share reflections, and connect around the books we explore together. (You will need to create an account to participate.) Whether you are a returning participant or joining for the first time, we look forward to coming together again for another rich and thought-provoking discussion.

Following the 2025 SOL Symposium, Society for UAP Studies Senior Correspondent Greg Bishop had the opportunity to visit the CISU (Centro Italiano Studi Ufologici) in Turin — guided by Edoardo Russo, SUAPS Advisory Council member and longtime Secretary of CISU. Founded in 1985, CISU represents one of the most enduring and methodologically rigorous research organizations in Europe dedicated to the scientific study of unidentified aerial phenomena. Its mission is guided by principles of rational inquiry, documentation, and critical evaluation, offering a clear alternative to sensationalist or pseudoscientific approaches that have often clouded public understanding of the UFO problem. At the heart of CISU’s operations lies one of the largest and most comprehensive UAP archives in the world, encompassing tens of thousands of investigative reports, media clippings, audiovisual records, and scholarly analyses dating back decades. These archives are not simply historical—they are living resources for ongoing research into the sociological, psychological, and physical dimensions of UAP phenomena. Bishop’s visit highlighted CISU’s enduring legacy as a model of grassroots scientific ufology: a volunteer-based, nonprofit institution that continues to investigate reports, analyze data, and preserve documentation with a commitment to transparency and scholarly rigor. Through its collaborations with international networks such as EuroUfo and partnerships with publishing initiatives like UPIAR, CISU continues to advance the serious study of UAPs in Europe and beyond. The Society for UAP Studies is proud to maintain close dialogue with institutions like CISU, whose dedication to evidence-based investigation embodies the very spirit of scientific curiosity and cross-border collaboration that defines our field. cisu.org
