Midwest vs. The Rest
Midwest vs. The Rest@midwestern_ope·
Things to remember when in the Midwest 1. If someone waves you through a 4 way stop, just go, it doesn’t have to make sense. 2. Chili is better on the second day. 3. “Living the dream” is a cry for help. 4. “Alright, welp” is a sign that it’s time to go.

it's true tho, parents of kids who sleep 14 hours a day are living a fundamentally different lifestyle than parents of 10–11 hour sleepers 3 extra hours every day. that's a side job. that's a second life not trying to complain, i actually love maximizing my time with my kid and I simply pay for babysitters when I need a break, but damn

mom of ~same age child at the library asked about my son's sleep schedule when I told her, she went silent and said, "forgive me for saying this, but I don't know how I would live like that" i was like girl! you would. you would complain. you would have slumber parties with your kid. you would survive👍

One of the most important parts of Fahrenheit 451 is a little throwaway simile that Bradbury inserts as Montag walks through the house of the old lady who is reported for having books by her neighbor. She doesn't just have some books. Her multi-story house is packed with them. Piles of them shift as Montag moves about, spraying them with kerosene. Bradbury writes, "A book alighted, almost obediently, like a white pigeon, in his hands, wings fluttering." I asked them to stop and think about why Bradbury might have used that image; why the "white pigeon". This is what these 7th graders came up with. (To be fair, they said "being saved" and I gave them the vocabulary word, "salvation"). I promise: they know things and, even better, THEY WANT TO KNOW MORE. The hardest part is proving that what they already know MATTERS and is a key that can unlock more. @DennyZ25153949

I miss midnight book release parties. Future generations aren't going to believe that millions of kids once queued up to celebrate the release of a book. At summer camps there was a collective hush as everyone read in silence. We may never experience this again.

@AdamPage85 We're thankful that we waited because we were much more patient parents than we would have been if we had had children earlier/younger.

I am 40 and my wife is 41. We were married at 25 and 26. We didn’t start having kids until 28 and 29. Two years of that wait were unexplained infertility. Once it happened, three kids followed the first kid. Our one wish? We would’ve married earlier, started right away instead of waiting two years before trying to have children, hopefully having more than four. God plans our steps and He redeems our choices. But if the couple is following Christ, our advice to them is to skip a long engagement, get married, and have babies. A true treasure.

@spencerbennett1 @sage_stage Not to mention the number of times I've been told I'm boring or not nice or not fair because I expect them to do their assignment and turn it in on time when they've had ample time/resources to complete the assignment in class. :)

@sage_stage When I hear students complain about teachers, they will often say things like: “That teacher isn’t fair” “They are boring” “I don’t understand what their expectations are” “They are not nice” This is by no means and exhaustive list, but many of these are in the teachers control

Had a conversation with an admin at a conference recently about how the students know that most of their teachers don't like them. How much of that needs to be on the teachers? And how much is on the students?

@spencerbennett1 @sage_stage I have heard all of those at various times about various teachers, even the most popular ones on campus. Because it's cool to complain about teachers. Students' feelings about teachers changes every few minutes so I don't base any of my self-worth on that.

@BiblicalBeauty Well, parents are being arrested when their middle school children are doing anything without them, whether it be going to a convenience store or playing in their backyard. So it's summer camps or hope nothing happens when both parents have to work.

Growing up, I don’t remember kids/teens spending the summer going from one consecutive camp to another throughout the summer. Some went once to one camp in the summer. Many went to none. When did the sports camp to music camp to pottery camp to STEM camp, etc. become a thing?

@HaydenHewitt Yes, a lot of vet practices have been bought out and are very much for-profit. Not because of the veterinarians, but because of what owns the clinic.

Dear Veterinarians, lots of pets are getting dumped due to affordability concerns. I realise you have to make a living but do you think charging £90 for anti biotics on top of a near £60 consultation fee is helping at all? I mean, helping anything apart from your shareholders.

@WonderWomaNinja Ours needed melatonin to reset their sleep cycle. And listened to radio stories at night to go to sleep. Followed by waking them up at a set time every morning. Not fun, but necessary for them in order to function as decent human beings.

I won’t take my children to the big library near us bc they have a youth section where parents are not allowed to go. The kids need a “safe space.” Ok, groomer 🙄
