@Sophie_Mokoena This is really shameful of Mauritius! Many western countries have way more cases than SA but they are not being barred. SA should definitly impose a travel ban on Mauritius until they lift their travel ban! @DIRCO_ZA @ClaysonMonyela

Because you are not a member of SADC. When the United States of America and United Kingdom have lifted the travel ban you take a decision to continue with the ban.

@AmbPeschke @News24 Partnership with 🇿🇦 while banning them and a health minister that says in tv that he doesn’t trust SA scientists and numbers ? Why is SA banned and UK not ? It’s the same like with delta. This is crazy,discrimination. As if 🇩🇪 doesn’t take SA serious because it doesn’t bring💰

This is nonsense. A virus that most likely came to Africa from Europe is being depicted as black and South African. The omicron response from the international community has exposed deep seated anti Africa sentiment that must be addressed.

Dear @CanHCZA how does ur gov explain this decision? If concern is the alleged buying/selling of test results, no country (incl yours) is immune from that. Ask EU countries or google the stories. U trust us/scientists when we detect new variants but doubt our testing capacity?

So Europe casually screws Southern Africa nations with travel bans over a Covid variant they already had - but it took South African scientists to do the real work and educate them on what it was. Go figure. 🇿🇦

Just so I understand the #omicronaffair well: 1) South African scientists characterize a variant. 2) The world blocks travel to EVERY Southern African country. 3) The world starts using the same sequencing strategy developed by South Africans and find lots of omicron. Right?
