The CIA's assessment, shaped by scientists Fauci's own agency paid, was then cited publicly as scientific consensus to discredit the lab-leak theory. He also helped prompt the "proximal origin" paper that ran the same operation in academic form. In 2024 he testified under oath that he had not, to his knowledge, spoken to the FBI, CIA, or DIA about viral research. The released emails contradict that directly. Whistleblowers who pushed the lab-leak theory were threatened and sidelined. One contractor was fired days after coming forward. The matter was referred to the IC Inspector General.
