“National Security officers have surrounded my family’s house, are threatening them, and want to arrest my brother. My family has nothing to do with any of this; targeting them is a way of targeting me and my work.” —

This deeply concerning incident constitutes a clear example of collective punishment, a method increasingly employed within the framework of transnational repression (TNR), whereby authorities exert pressure on activists abroad by targeting their relatives.
Egyptwide unequivocally denounces such practices and urges the Egyptian authorities to cease all forms of transnational repression and collective punishment without delay. Under no circumstances should families be exploited as instruments of coercion or intimidation.
