On 21 June 2006, Serbia and Montenegro played their final match at the FIFA World Cup, 18 days after the country had officially ceased to exist. On June 3, 2006, Montenegro formally declared independence from Serbia, dissolving the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, just as the 2006 World Cup in Germany was about to begin. Rather than scramble to split the roster, FIFA let the already, qualified team compete under its old name anyway. On June 21, 2006, 18 days after their country had ceased to exist, Serbia and Montenegro played their final match, a 3-2 loss to Ivory Coast in Munich, with the old Yugoslav-era anthem "Hey, Slavs" playing to a squad representing two nations that were, politically, already gone. It remains the only World Cup team in history to represent multiple sovereign states in the finals since the old Soviet-successor "Commonwealth of Independent States" team did the same at Euro 1992.
