We are losing teachers from the profession and we are likely to lose more teachers because of excessive, unsustainable workload. We need more teachers, not fewer, in our schools. Vote YES to keep experienced teachers in and attract new ones to the profession.

The EIS has noted today’s flurry of education statistic releases from the Scottish Government, and highlighted that the figures confirm the Scottish Government’s failure to meet its commitments on the employment of additional teachers as a means to tackle excessive teacher workload. eis.org.uk/latest-news/ed…

Excessive teacher workload is a long-standing issue that numerous government workload-reduction initiatives, national agreements and campaigns over more than a decade, have been unable to resolve. Vote YES to force the hand of employers and government to act decisively to reduce workload

Excessive workload and working hours are health and safety concerns as they increase the risk of serious health issues, as identified by the World Health Organisation and the International Labour Organisation. Vote YES to protect the health and safety of teachers.

ASN-related work is a big part of the unsustainable workload problem – with at least 40% of young people having an identified support need and a 20% reduction in ASN teacher numbers since 2010, there are simply not enough staff or sufficient time to respond to the level and complexity of ASN need. Vote YES YES for more staffing for ASN eis.org.uk

Workload is unsustainable – teachers are working on average 11.5 hours each week over and above their contracted 35 hours per week contract. With 1688 teachers fewer than in 2007, today’s teachers are providing unpaid labour to subsidise an understaffed and underfunded education service. Vote YES YES for more sustainable teacher workload. Scotlands teachers are facing precarity, casualisation and unemployment on the one hand while other teachers are overworked to the tune of a day and half a week extra on the other hand. Its time to vote YES YES and act on workload, precarity, casualisation and underemployement of teachers.

Members of EIS Council are reminding you to vote in the EIS Workload Ballot. Fill in your ballot paper & pop it in the post ASAP! The EIS is clear that reducing weekly class contact time to 21 hours, & ensuring the full 1.5 hours to increase weekly preparation & correction time, would mark an essential step forward in addressing unsustainable levels of teacher workload

Your vote matters. Only one thing will persuade the Scottish Government to deliver the manifesto that it was elected on – we, the teachers and our collective resolve to press for promises to be honoured.

A red line for teachers remains that the 1.5 hour reduction in class contact must be allocated to teachers' preparation of learning, teaching and assessment, and teachers treated as trusted professionals to use the time as they see fit in support of young people and their learning
