🚨🇬🇭🇬🇭 Okumkɔm – The Asante Royal Who Faced Humiliation but Became Kumasi’s Longest-Serving Mayor 💯 Do you remember Okumkɔm? The famous Ashanti Regional mayor from the 80s to the 90s. He is by far the most popular mayor Kumasi has ever had. In my childhood days at Kumasi Kronum, there was a man in our area called Okumkom. It was through him that I first got to know about the real Okumkɔm. Let’s learn about him today. Okumkɔm was the popular nickname of Barima Nana Akwasi Agyeman. He was a well known Ghanaian politician and also a royal from the Asante Kingdom. Many people remember him as the longest serving mayor of Kumasi. The name “Okumkɔm” means “killer of hunger” in Twi. It showed how people saw him as a leader who cared for his people and made sure things were working in the city. He served as the head of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for more than 20 years. His time in office covered many governments, including the military era, the PNDC period, and later the NDC government. This made him one of the most experienced local leaders Ghana has ever had. Apart from politics, he was a royal. He came from the Oyoko Royal Family of Asanteman. He was even known as Daakyehene, meaning “future king,” and was in line to become Asantehene after his uncle, Otumfuo Opoku Ware Il But things did not go as planned. During the 1979 coup d'état in Ghana, he was arrested together with other leaders who had served under the government of Ignatius Kutu Acheampong. During that time, he was treated badly and humiliated. Reports say he was forced to carry a bucket of human waste on his head. In Asante culture, this is a very serious issue. Royals, especially from the Oyoko family, are not supposed to carry loads on their heads. There is even a saying, “Oyoko ba mmɔ kahyire,” meaning a royal should not carry anything on the head. Because of this incident, and also because he was involved in politics, he was no longer considered fit to become king. His chance to sit on the Golden Stool was lost. After that, he focused fully on politics and public service. He became a close associate of Jerry John Rawlings and later joined the NDC. When Ghana returned to democratic rule in 1992, he was appointed to lead the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. He served for over 20 years, making him the longest-serving mayor in Kumasi’s history. He was known for being firm, disciplined, and very active in running the city. Many people saw him as a strong leader who kept Kumasi organized and growing. That is why his name is still remembered today. Barima Nana Akwasi Agyeman passed away on January 14, 2020, at the age of 86. He was buried at the Breman Royal Mausoleum in Kumasi, with many important people attending his funeral. Even today, the name Okumkɔm still lives on. From the streets of Kronum to the whole of Kumasi, he is remembered as a man who lost a throne but gained respect through leadership and service.

The Ghana Immigration Service has arrested over 600 undocumented migrants, including 381 children, in a dawn operation across parts of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
