Seychelles is usually all about island-hopping and beaches, but I had to see what its capital, Victoria, had in store. The city is small (it’s the smallest capital city in the world) but full of surprises 🌿🐢🇸🇨

@RoryPetzer Oh Rory 💔💔💔 This is so devastating to read. One thing I can say for sure is that although Benson’s life was short, it was clearly so full of love. Sending you a massive hug my friend

CHAMPIONS! Last night we had to one of the most difficult things we’ve ever done.  Our beautiful 4-year-old Benson boy had to be relieved of his pain just after 17h30 yesterday.  It was sudden and unexpected, but not completely unanticipated.  I’ll try my best to explain it all with my best attempt at timelines too.  It started late last year this year when a tumour was found digging its way into his jaw. It was an aggressive little thing.  I’ll never forget that evening with our beautiful veterinarian and friend Dr Kath Sparks at Hillcrest Medivet as we all sat sobbing in her consulting room as she broke the news.  After expecting the worst and just waiting for it to happen, as a last resort, Dr Kath spoke to a few of the country’s best specialists and veterinary oncologists.  Benson went for scans, and it was confirmed the tumour could be removed with very little to no damage to his jaw and no affect on his quality of life. This was always our number one concern: Quality of life and Benson’s comfort.  So, Benson went for surgery and spent a few days recovering in his 5-star hospital eating rotisserie chickens and being spoiled by the staff daily!  We fetched Benson and were carefully hopeful that this would be the last of it. More tests were done and we were told there is always the chance the cancer could come back at any time or it could stay away for years or never return at all.  Beautiful Benson boy quickly recovered and became his boisterously and infectiously happy self again.  We were happy. We were hopeful.  Fast forward a few months and all of a sudden Benson yelps every now and then when he moves his head forward or to the side. Not always, just now and then.  Once again, we’re hopeful.  We hope it’s just an injury or maybe he bumped his head on the table. That’s probably it.  A few days later, it gets worse. The painkillers and muscle relaxants aren’t helping.  We take him back for who x-rays and scans.  An aggressive tumour was found on/in his skull and another on his lungs. This was yesterday morning.  A tearful Dr Kath has to break the news to us and we decide it’s time.  We fetch Benson and take him home for his last afternoon with Pongo and rest of the family.  We cook him a big sirloin steak and some beef mince. We hand feed him in the lounge as it’s too painful for him to move his head down or forward. It all progressed so quickly from a quiet yelp now and then to almost immobile.  We all just sit there holding his paws and stroking him as he lay down on his side on a blanket with a pillow under his head - he loved it when we held his paws! He would demand it sometimes.   We chatted to Benson and thanked him for being such a good boy and for keeping Pongo safe from the monkeys. We thanked him for all the joy and energy he had brought into the home and for making so many people so happy. Pongo sat there too, right up against Benson and he definitely knew what was happening.  Dr Kath and her assistant Cyprian arrived at the house just after 17h20. As we all sat around Benson covering him with love, he drifted off to sleep with absolutely no discomfort or pain.  The house is quiet and it will take a while to get used to life without Benson’s big heart and infectious love. He filled every space with big energy and was always up for a cuddle. His place on the couch he hogged every evening is empty but his spirit will live on in this home.  I cannot even attempt to put into words how incredible and loving and caring Dr Kath Sparks and her whole team at Medivet Hillcrest has been. We went back there today to thank everyone and it was snot en trane all round once again. Dr Kath gave us two cards with Benson’s paw prints on.  We await his ashes now which will be sprinkled all over his favourite spots in the garden.  Sixty60 drivers can now drive up and down the road in peace!  Our beautiful Benson boy. We love you. Thank you.  26 December 2021 - 19 June 2025. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
