@ZachWeiner I guess it depends on if the theory is advanced as "The Reason" vs as a significant contributing factor.
Not to say that It Isn't The Economy, Stupid. Merely that the marginal shifts of reasons X, Y, or Z can greatly matter in winner-take-all situations.

I really think any theory of social reasons why Democrats did poorly needs to start with the question: would this theory hold true if inflation were low, housing prices were moderate, and wage gains high?

I think it can be both, providing conservatives do nothing to mitigate climate change, but follow this formula - to which I would add, flood the zone with misinformation - when natural disasters and other consequences do occur. See: Forest fires are the result of arsonists
