Mossadegh, Kashani, and the 1953 Coup that Never Happened
This post is about how Mossadegh, the Prime Minister of Iran, was brought into power by an Ayatollah and how he was later removed for violating the law repeatedly.
This is Ayatollah Kashani, an influential Shia mullah during the reign of the Shah.
He was the precursor to Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.
The bald man in the second picture is Mossadegh, the Prime Minister of Iran, who many mistakenly believe was illegally removed by the Shah.
1. The Anti-Capitalist, Anti-Shah, Pro-Nazi, and Islamist Ayatollah
Like his successors, Khomeini and Khamenei, Ayatollah Kashani was a proponent of establishing a global Islamic caliphate.
Of course, like any Islamist, he was also strongly against capitalism because he believed capitalism was all about "colonialism, despotism, and oppression."
After all, in an Islamic theocracy, all properties are the properties of Allah, and the Ayatollah is the representative of Allah on Earth.
To oppose the Ayatollah and Sharia Law is to oppose Allah—and that is considered extreme despotism and oppression.
And, of course, like a typical Islamist, he openly supported and advocated for Nazism and the massacre of Jews, which is why he was arrested and exiled to the so-called British-controlled region of Palestine.
2. Kashani's Return from Exile and the Rise of Mossadegh
After his return from exile, he once again resumed his incitement against democracy, capitalism, and the Shah.
He expressed great hostility toward any progressive effort of the Shah's government, from education for women to freedom of religion to foreign investment.
He notably opposed the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, which was founded in 1909 during the Qajar dynasty, which preceded the Pahlavi dynasty.
Kashani demanded that the oil company be nationalized, and this is where he found use for Mossadegh, who, ironically, was from a bureaucratic family in power during the Qajar dynasty.
Ayatollah Kashani, who was also the speaker of parliament in Iran, after learning about Mossadegh's political leanings, used his influence—and of course Shia propaganda—to propel Mossadegh to becoming Prime Minister.
Mossadegh did eventually win the vote of the parliament. The Shah did respect the vote and did appoint Mossadegh as Prime Minister of Iran in 1951.
3. Kashani's Fallout with Mossadegh
Like Kashani, Mossadegh had agendas of his own.
Mossadegh, who was a Marxist and vehemently against the Pahlavi monarchy, wanted to consolidate power for himself.
For Kashani, who believed the state must be governed by the Muslim clergy, this was unacceptable.
This was the start of their fallout.
When Kashani realized that Mossadegh had different plans, he once again used his influence to bring down the very person he first propped up.
4. Mossadegh's Repeated Violations of the Law, Dismissal from Government, and Arrest
During his tenure as prime minister, Mossadegh committed several acts that outright violated the very constitution of the country.
In 1952, Mossadegh pressured the parliament to grant him executive powers that would allow him to enact laws without parliamentary approval. This was against the law.
In 1953, Mossadegh demanded a national referendum to dissolve the parliament. This was against the law.
In 1953, once again, Mossadegh violates the law by refusing the Shah's dismissal decree—a dismissal decree invoked precisely because Mossadegh had repeatedly violated the law and openly opposed the very constitution of the country.
Finally, on August 19, 1953, the Shah exercised his constitutional right and responsibility, and ordered the military to seize control of the capital and arrest Mossadegh.
Mossadegh surrendered himself to the authorities on August 20, 1953, after going into hiding for several hours.
5. The Myth of a Foreign Orchestrated Coup
What people do not understand about the involvement of the United States and Great Britain is this:
The United States and Great Britain, both allies of Iran, would rally behind the Shah's government to counter the propaganda of Kashani, Mossadegh, and their Islamist and Communist allies.
When it suited them, the United States and Great Britain would write favorably for the Shah, and unfavorably when it did not suit them.
The involvement of these two countries does not change this fact about Mossadegh: he violated the law and was rightfully removed by the Shah's government.
Once again, another myth about the Shah has been debunked.
Thank you for reading.
