The only think that competes with VPPs for the title of *worst naming convention ever* is “synthetic inertia” It’s not “synthetic” inertia, it’s a digital/programmed controls response which delivers the same (or better) grid reliability attribute that the system has historically gotten from the properties of rotating mass in synchronous gen So much potential for progress is lost simply from our inability to clearly articulate (and therefore agree on) our true first principle objectives

@ElectricCat8 @SlBrandin How is the "superior" inverters going to help blow fuses on distribution that assumed that the grid at the substation could make the current necessary to keep the fuse blowing order correct. This kind of consideration might make you think eff it I'll just go with the synccon

@ElectricCat8 It’s the inverse of this, it’s not accurate terminology and they can achieve the actual objectives better than the conventional alternatives

Wow 👀Cuban journalist @yoanisanchez has reported that members of the Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (Code Pinks attendees) consumed so much electricity that buildings in close proximity lost power and plunged into darkness.

I've been to Joliet a bunch of times. One of those towns that used to have money, still has a nice downtown, nice architecture, went through decline. sits at the lower middle class part of the spectrum now. A kind of place you can buy a house for like $300,000. Not surprised they were ok with a big data center. These places that went through decline are the most likely places to approve of data centers. They are looking to come back and accept anything they can get. Other richer places dont want them, and poorer places that were nver nice dont want them either
robert@rfhirschfeld

The proposed Joliet data center would cover 795 acres, about the size of 2.5 Grant Parks. At full buildout, it would consume 1.8 gigawatts of electricity. For reference, the entire City of Chicago uses about 3.45 gigawatts. One facility. More than half of Chicago's power.

@nukebarbarian a lot of states are offering huge tax abatements so this doesn't necessarily scale. and saying you'll fund government is very different than putting money directly into the pockets of locals

@AriPeskoe @xiaowang1984 I think your point was not that transmission is bad, rather other rate payers shouldn’t pay for transmission caused by data centers. Is that part right? Would you say the same for transmission needs caused by for wind/solar?
