As AI data centers scale toward hundreds of megawatts per site, the challenge is not simply generating more energy. It is about how quickly, how reliably, and how intelligently that energy can be delivered. Key discussions centered on the critical bottlenecks shaping the next phase of infrastructure: - Grid capacity and interconnection timelines - Permitting and deployment speed - The gap between capital availability and power availability A structural shift is emerging in how AI infrastructure is developed. The ground-mounted solar project is owned and developed by AMEA Power, with Sterling & Wilson serving as the EPC contractor, and forms part of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, Round 6 (REIPPPPR6). Spanning approximately 200 hectares (490 acres), the project has achieved full-capacity grid connection. For this landmark project, Sineng Electric supplied EP-6600-HB-UD, 33kV central turnkey skids that support stable operation across a wide temperature range from −30°C to 60°C. Once fully operational, the Doornhoek Solar Power Station is expected to generate more than 325 GWh of clean electricity annually, supplying power to approximately 97,000 households and offsetting an estimated 330,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year. Located in Zhangye City, China, an area rich in wind and solar resources, the project directly addresses structural challenges associated with high renewable penetration, including intermittency, grid congestion, and limited transmission capacity. The project is equipped with Sineng Electric’s 1,250 kW central PCS, designed to deliver high-efficiency energy conversion and superior system adaptability. The PCS is equipped with an IP65 protection rating to withstand sand and dust conditions in the Gobi Desert. In addition, the solution offers millisecond-level dynamic response capability, enabling rapid and precise support for grid ancillary services. As a four-hour long-duration energy storage system, the project can store up to 1.2 million kWh of renewable electricity per charge-discharge cycle. On an annual basis, it is expected to reduce curtailed wind and solar generation by more than 79 million kWh.
