its actually pretty simple he didn't really get to be a person and was treated as less than a person by everyone around him even before when he was broke and starving. he didn't get a single chance to be human until pochita was like "ok yeah my bad"

The characters are also the ones who go through the journey, and it naturally upsets readers when that journey gets undone
