@PoisInvariance Iirc Poisson is fish in French and I had a professor who would always abbreviate poisson with a doodle of a fish in his lecture notes

I hope I didn’t scare off my new coworker by jumping into an explanation of the Poisson equation within an hour of meeting them

@108sj18d @riemarineVT If you want to use it that's fine. But but just saying it's a tool isn't enough. Tools can be dangerous. You wouldn't give a toddler a power drill. If you think you can use it responsibly then go for it. You know yourself better than some stranger on the internet.

@108sj18d @riemarineVT I guess I could be clear. Yes applications are competitive but that doesn't mean that your classes are. Moreover having graded for graduate level courses I've seen first hand how a reliance on LLMs can handicap new grad students.

@108sj18d @riemarineVT It's not cope. I'm already in grad school. The independence of LoRs and interviews was exactly my point. Your GPA while important isn't gonna make or break your chances and you can absolutely get a GPA that will not get your application thrown out without the use of an LLM.

@108sj18d @riemarineVT You addmission to a grad program or internship won't come down to how you ranked in class. If you do well enough to show you're proficient with the material you aren't going to lose a spot to someone that scores a little higher. It'll be about your interview, LoR's, and essays.

@ElectroCalVT @riemarineVT It is competition. I'm not saying I disagree with your second point but how is it not competition? Everyone is applying to the same gradschools, the same internships etc.

@108sj18d @riemarineVT It's not a competition. And in the long run you're disadvantaging yourself through cognitive offloading in a very important time for brain development.

@riemarineVT I agree. As a student you simply put yourself at a significant disadvantage to not use LLMs to take on more or harder course load than you would handle normally(because other students and your competition are doing the same).

@riemarineVT @MathKronie I had the same issue this semester. No homework grades meant they didn't do anything until the exams and because so many were unprepared, they resorted to cheating

@MathKronie Urgh yeah that sucks I didnt even think of that We’ve basically stopped counting hws as grades in the lower level classes which means that the grades r a little more honest but idk I feel it disincentivizes students to practice bc 18yos don’t have discipline wo consequences lol

@Dark_HoodTTV I did. I honestly have no sympathy for it. Plenty of other students worked hard for their degrees, and theirs shouldn't be devalued by him getting one as well

@ElectroCalVT Did you hear about the student who pulled out his laptop, at graduation, and showed the camera his chatGPT history? It listed all his assignments and tests he had. Apparently he got his degree revoked.

Caught a student cheating on the final today. Gotta love teaching
