De lange weg van Slak (The straight story of Slug) is a beautiful Dutch picture book brought to life by award-winning illustrator Eleni Debo. We caught up with her to learn how she created the layout and artwork using the Affinity suite: affin.co/picturebook

Today is the launch of the very first #childrensbook I’ve illustrated! 🎉 ‘The straight story of Slug’ is the story by Tom Marien of a headstrong little Slug that always moves through life in a straight line, no matter the obstacles. Published by @JulieVerhaert at Pelckmans

Also great to work with its rich visual history; as many others have gone before me to illustrate the many many editions, it was a pleasure to find a way to honour this classic and carve out my little corner. Details and sketches. All #madeinaffinity

Adapted by @RobGMacfarlane and @SimonMcBurney and comissioned by @SimonNPitts, it has a fantastic cast including Toby Jones, Harriet Walker and Paul Rhys. Quite humbling to take part in a project that combines such creative talent.

Had the great honour to illustrate the cover for the 12-part audio drama/podcast of Susan Cooper’s cult novel #TheDarkIsRising for @bbcworldservice!

@sajadmhy Diversifying your inspiration certainly helps. Don’t just look at the work of your favourite illustrator. Why not look at classical painters? Sculptors, architects, fashion, nature; the list is endless; and each will deepen your work and make it more personal. Hope that helps!

@sajadmhy I don’t think anyone starts from zero: it is always a process of reinterpretation of the inspiration you have absorbed. That being said, there is a distinction between observing the works of others to learn from it; and to indiscriminately copy the essence of it.

@sajadmhy Hi Sajad, thanks so much for your kind words! I’m glad you enjoy my brushpack! I don’t have a course just yet, but I hope to work towards something like that in the future. Roman Muradov has a great course on @skillshare that I found very inspiring!
