The Regional Validation Workshop on the EAC Artificial Intelligence Strategy has officially kicked off this morning in Kampala Uganda. The meeting is being co-convened by the EAC @jumuiya, and EASTECO, with support from @eacgiz under the EAC AI Alliance Programme. The two-day workshop brings together key stakeholders from across the region to review, refine, and validate the EAC Artificial Intelligence Strategy (2026–2031). This milestone engagement follows extensive regional consultations in all EAC Partner States and marks a critical step toward establishing a harmonized, inclusive, and forward-looking AI framework for the region. Over the next two days, participants from government, academia, research institutions, and the private sector will work collectively to shape a Strategy that will guide the responsible adoption of AI, strengthen regional collaboration, and unlock innovation-driven growth across East Africa.

The proposed EAC AI Strategy is designed to complement the EAC Digital Transformation agenda and aligns with key frameworks including the African Union Continental AI Strategy (2024), EAC Vision 2050, the EAC STI Policy, and the Sustainable Development Goals. The expected outcome is a stakeholder-endorsed and regionally owned AI Strategy, complete with a clear implementation roadmap, that will be submitted to the relevant Sectoral Council for formal adoption. This process marks an important transition—from technical drafting to collective regional ownership—and reinforces our commitment to positioning East Africa as a coordinated, forward-looking, and globally competitive player in the AI ecosystem.

Earlier today, Fellows of the EAC Youth Fellowship – Cohort 3 paid a familiarization visit to the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. During the visit, the Fellows held an engaging meeting with leadership representatives, gaining deeper insight into the workings of the institution and its mandate in driving regional integration across East Africa. The discussions highlighted the role of the Secretariat in coordinating policies, programs and partnerships that shape the region’s development agenda. But also the organs, institutions and frameworks of the EAC. The visit also provided an opportunity for Fellows to connect their learning to real institutional frameworks, understanding how youth leadership can actively contribute to strengthening regional cooperation. This engagement is especially significant as the Fellowship is organized in partnership with @jumuiya reinforcing a shared commitment to nurturing young leaders who will shape the future of the region.
