African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM)

We were honoured to welcome Hon. @AmosLugoloobi, Uganda’s Minister of Finance & APRM Focal Point, to the APRM HQ 🇿🇦. As APRM Chair, Uganda is setting the tone, aligning priorities with our Strategic Plan and leading by example in advancing governance across Africa.

Minister Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi addresses the #APRMDay 2026 Lecture Series on Economic Governance at the University of Pretoria, marking the 23rd anniversary of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM)

Today, I had the pleasure of receiving Hon. @AmosLugoloobi, Uganda’s State Minister for Finance and Planning (@mofpedU) and APRM Focal Point. ​We discussed key priorities for Uganda’s two-year chairmanship of the @APRMorg. Our teams engaged in a productive session to align Uganda's vision with our strategic plan, ensuring our initiatives are perfectly synchronized. ​We look forward to this new chapter under Uganda’s leadership as we work together to address the bottlenecks hindering good governance across Africa. 🌍🇺🇬

Zimbabwe’s National AI Strategy reflects Africa’s growing momentum in AI and digital transformation. Strong e-governance frameworks will be key to ensuring AI delivers for development. APRM continues to support responsible AI across the continent.

I was pleased to hold a bilateral meeting with Mr. @parfait_onanga, Special Representative to the @_AfricanUnion and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union, on the margins of the High-Level Africa–Europe Strategic Dialogue in Johannesburg. We exchanged views on the role of @APRMorg in advancing the peace–governance–security nexus amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in Africa. I also expressed appreciation to United Nations entities for their continued support for key initiatives, including governance reviews and programmes such as Agenda 2063/SDGs, e-governance, credit rating, and early warning systems. I look forward to strengthening our collaboration in pursuit of “The Africa We Want.”

I held a bilateral engagement with Amb. Ben Marc Diendéré, @CAunionafriEN Permanent Observer to the @_AfricanUnion and Special Envoy to Africa, to discuss expanding our multifaceted cooperation. A key focus of our dialogue was the continued and enhanced support from the Canada toward the @APRMorg, particularly through the Governance Support Program, a cornerstone initiative advancing stability, democratic governance, and institutional resilience across the continent.

@_AfricanUnion, Amb. @DCP_Haddadi, paid a courtesy visit to the APRM Hq, where she was received by CEO @APRM_MarieRose. She engaged with APRM staff & management and participated in a sit-down interview reflecting on governance progress & development efforts across the continent.

Today I received the Deputy Chairperson of the @_AfricanUnion Commission, H.E. Amb. @SelmaHaddadi at our new @APRMorg premises in Centurion, South Africa. During our engagement, we briefed her on the APRM’s latest achievements, including recently completed peer review reports, key initiatives currently underway, and preparations for upcoming flagship deliverables such as the #AGR and the operationalisation of the Africa Credit Rating Agency (#AfCRA). We also exchanged views on administrative matters and on further strengthening the effectiveness of the APRM mandate to ensure the delivery of tangible governance results across the continent. I extend my sincere appreciation to my sister for her reinforced commitment to our work and unwavering support to the APRM.

The APRM Continental Secretariat @APRMorg had the pleasure of receiving Mr Donavan Fullard, Head of the Youth Programme at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), together with Ms Tyla Nxumalo from SAIIA Youth. The engagement focused on exploring areas of collaboration in the implementation of the APRM-SAIIA Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with particular emphasis on advancing the recommendations of the APRM Youth Symposium, contributing to the Africa Governance Report including the theme “Youth in Governance: From Promise to Prosperity” and supporting initiatives marking the 20th Anniversary of the African Youth Charter. The discussions reaffirmed a shared commitment to strengthening youth participation in governance and policy processes across the continent.

As part of #APRMDAY 2026, APRM hosts a Lecture Series on Economic Governance, focusing on credit ratings and the urgent need for the African Credit Rating Agency (AfCRA). #APRM23

The meeting also provided an overview of the APRM mandate, governance structures and the role of the Panel of Eminent Persons in leading Africa’s voluntary peer review process.

CEO @APRM_MarieRose welcomed the new Panel Members and congratulated them on their appointment. She reaffirmed the critical role of the Panel members in safeguarding the integrity, credibility and independence of the APRM country review process across participating Member States.

The APRM convened the Introductory Meeting with the Newly Appointed Members of the APR Panel of Eminent Persons, marking the first engagement between the new Panel and the APRM Continental Secretariat.
