During the HLPF Ministerial Segment, the @APRMorg co-hosted the VNR Lab on Localising the SDGs and #Agenda2063 through Transformative, Equitable, Innovative and Coordinated Action at the @UN Headquarters in New York. I had the honour of delivering the opening remarks, calling on institutions to move beyond plans and reporting and translate national commitments into tangible results for local communities through stronger national ownership and coordinated action.

H.E. President @edmnangagwa presides over the official launch of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), Zimbabwe Chapter. The APRM is a voluntary, self monitoring, highly participatory and transparent mechanism established by the African Union in 2003. The APRM focuses on 4 pillars which are 1. Democracy and Political Governance 2. Economic Governance and Management 3. Corporate Governance, and 4. Socio - economic development. Zimbabwe joins 43 other AU member states that have voluntarily joined the mechanism since its inception. The President of Uganda, H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is the Chairperson of the African Peer Review Forum, congratulated Zimbabwe on the launch. President Museveni, who was represented by his Vice President, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Jessica Rose Epel Alupo, said the launch reflected Zimbabwe's strong commitment to good political and economic governance. The move, President Museveni said, reflects strong political will to emancipate the lives of the citizens of Zimbabwe. In his remarks to mark the occasion, President Mnangagwa said the APRM aligns seamlessly with Vision 2030 and NDS2 in Zimbabwe. The President added that the mechanism dovetails with Sections 9 and 12 of the Zimbabwe constitution which madate Government to adopt efficient governance mechanisms and strong foundational principles for a sound foreign policy. The President said that African led solutions are most ideal for African problems and the days of running with agendas set in foreign Western capitals are over, as Africa charts it's own course through continental integration. President Mnangagwa said the Second Republic remains a people-centred Government which continues to evolve in line with the needs and interests of the people under the philosophy Nyika inovakwa, igotongwa, igonamatirwa nevene vayo.

Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Rose Epel Alupo said she was in the country on behalf of Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, in his capacity as Chair of the APRM. She added that her discussions with President Mnangagwa focused on bilateral relations between the two countries, and on efforts to accelerate trade and jointly market both countries bilaterally and multilaterally to attract tourism. The two leaders also discussed the launch of Zimbabwe’s APRM Country Review Report, with both parties expressing optimism for a successful launch.

The APRM is a voluntary African Union instrument established in 2003 to promote good governance, democracy, economic management and socio-economic development through self-assessment and peer review among member States.Zimbabwe acceded to the mechanism in 2020 and has since been implementing processes leading to the official launch. #APRM #Zimbabwe
