@DrIanTurner I don’t think so. Look who’s coming up behind him. This is catastrophic for the future of American democracy.

I guess the saving grace for America is that #Trump won't be 'serving' for more than two terms. That's not because of Amendment XXII of the US Constitution - Trump's above piddling legal and constitutional rules - but because of his age.

@drjoshdoeslaw I learned it was called the Windy City, not because of the weather, but due to local politicians being windbags. Dude, try living in Aberdeen!
English

@drjoshdoeslaw Pike Place Market is awesome. If you had more time, I’d suggest checking out the San Juan or Gulf islands. You are in the best part of the country! Admittedly, I’m biased (but correct).
English

@drjoshdoeslaw You are living your best American life! Are you going to Oregon, i.e., the best state?

@ElizaBechtold Brace yourself for the photos for the next couple of weeks, then - am off on a cross-country Amtrak trip...

My book review for @SFovargue and Craig Purshouse's edited collection "Leading Works in Health Law and Ethics" is finally out! Thank you to book reviews editor @whiterxbbit for the comments and for making this happen! journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/09…

@DrIanTurner During my PhD, my Supervisor had to remind me not to footnote like an American. 😅

@drjoshdoeslaw I am SO excited about Harris/Walz!!! Walz was my favourite of the contenders.
English

@drjohnstanton The race was always about that, though. I think a lot of Trump voters understand this they just don’t care because (a) they think they’ll be fine and (b) they don’t care about anybody else. Others are victims of disinformation.

Waiting for the start of the @KlugeCtr and @hssonline organised conference "Experts, Politics and Power: Scientific Narratives, Past and Present"
So far I can confirm US conference coffee is better than UK equivalents.

English

@drjoshdoeslaw I’m losing my shit over the US being on the precipice of authoritarianism. But, hey ho.
English

@DemocracyTalk @ICON__S I’m here, too. Hope to see you at some point!
English

Just 2 hours in and I’m already extremely glad to be at @ICON__S this year - fascinating discussions incl democratic backsliding and resilience worldwide (eg Mexico, Mongolia, Poland, Indonesia, India) + panel now on the state of the field (of comparative constitutional studies)
Tomás Daly@DemocracyTalk
Starting in 30 minutes…! The 2024 ICON•S Annual Conference at @IEuniversity on July 8-10 will bring together over 2000 scholars. ➡️ Looking forward to the Early Careers Reception, where I’ll be moderating a discussion on Democratic Backsliding #icons2024

Love a printed book- got our copy of the Law of the Paris Agreement 📖@Mitchell_Lennan and Elisa Morgera coauthored a chapter on ocean-based climate action, and I wrote on the Enhanced Transparency Framework. Thank you to the editors and feel free to DM of you need a copy.

@StrictScrutiny_ Any thoughts on why no one is discussing sovereign immunity in relation this ruling? It’s not directly on point but is related -it stems directly from Crown immunity and the maxim that the King can do no wrong. Some state actors are already above the law and have been for ages
English

NOW OUT: emergency episode on the emergency that is the Court’s immunity ruling. (tl;dr- SCOTUS goes full Dick Nixon, “if [Republican] Presidents do it, then it’s not illegal.” crooked.com/podcast/scotus…
English

@steve_vladeck @sara_dillon I’m wondering why no one is talking about sovereign immunity, which stems directly from Crown immunity. This is a related issue to presidential immunity. Certain people have always been above the law in America.
English

@sara_dillon If you think that’s how I teach my classes, I might politely suggest that you read some of my work, including the rather significant reforms for which I’ve been arguing for years.
English

I urge, I beg, legal academia to stop teaching law as if it is an arcane game of parse the reasoning. I’m writing about the fault in our law schools; legal cases as a mind game, ignoring the urgent need for deep law reform.
Steve Vladeck@steve_vladeck
I began this #SCOTUS term wondering if Justice Barrett would emerge as the swing vote in the most politically charged cases—with Chief Justice Roberts and the three Democratic appointees to her left. It now seems clear that she’s only the fourth vote on that side, not the fifth.
English

@DrIanTurner At least this is something. I think it’s important because it is a triumph for the rule of law (domestically) and exposes the Republican Party as fundamentally anti-democratic and rotten to the core. Whether this will matter politically is another question.
