Go back in time to #LakeOswego, Oregon in 1986 with #DeathlingsNovel. This small town is turned upside down by the murder of Lisa Bittermann, but she’s not done with them. She comes back intent on revenge, aided by her best friends and a zombie. amazon.com/Deathlings-Ell…

Finding balance is hard. I worked on Deathlings all October, then Halloween came and I realized I didn't have any fun. I traded living for working. Now I have a schedule set out for many months. I feel like either committing or quitting, but nothing in between. #WritingCommunity

To succeed a writer needs three things. Inspiration, motivation, and discipline. Unfortunately, you can only choose two. #WritingCommunity

@Channakt Character. I love writing small stories about interpersonal relationships instead of huge world in danger stories. Still very fantasy/sci-fi though.

Are your stories more character or plot driven? I aim for more character driven stories, although some of my stories are more plot driven. So I tend to have more character bonding, families etc so we can get to know them more. #WritingCommunity #WritersCafe #WritingQ

@Tanweer_Dar Lots of nodding, shrugging, shaking their head, staring, and gazing. Those are my greatest writing crutches. It’s a problem.

@EHollandAuthor PTSD and a few other things, including emetophobia. It really bugs me that people don’t take it seriously.

@ARFrederiksen Yes! It really bugs me that showing instead of telling is treated as a hard and fast rule when all it takes is a glance through the classics to see that it doesn’t really matter. Just because it’s not the style today doesn’t mean it’s bad.

This may be controversial, but I don't mind telling in a book (save for YA). The prose can feel more lyrical and can carry more of the author's personal style, but maybe it's my love of classics that've shaped my opinion here. Either way, I don't mind telling over showing 🤷🏼‍♀️

@stevehillwriter Bought a bunch of fancy cooking appliances at the age of twelve because the salesman was just so persuasive.

@MikeDug45117510 Yes! I would honestly love to experiment with all sorts of things. Harvesting fruit or veggies sounds fun, so does working in a library. I’d even be down to work retail if I could be rude to rude customers. There’s a million things I would try if I could.

@KevinBarrick I definitely think you should wait a year, but my parents were 4 months and my brother was 2, so I don’t necessarily have high hopes that I’ll break the pattern.

@ElleryFenn I write with the idea that every character is the hero of their own story with their own wants and needs. Their main plots become secondary plot lines as they intersect with my MC and the main plot. Think soap opera multiple story lines or video game side quests

Am I the only one that struggles to come up with secondary plots? I know there needs to be more going on, but what? #WritingCommunity

@WittyMystic Oh that’s so smart. And obvious. How come I didn’t think of that? I’ll definitely be using that. Thank you.

@ElleryFenn I used to have this problem. I found that if I did a greater character analysis that a secondary plot would flow from other aspects of my character than the main aspects driving the primary plot.

@ElleryFenn *reads this and immediately questions whether her current WIP has enough of a secondary plot.*
