@seuIgifilm That's why I can't do dating apps. I hate texting. Barely tolerate it with very good friends. The idea of texting with a stranger is my idea of hell. And people don't seem to understand if you're only interested in making plans to actually meet.

@nishanciefendi I mean I'm not expecting everyone to read every book completely etc, but the idea that you could trust the summaries of someone else without checking the sources yourself is just mad. Even if it is a human whose judgement you have reason to trust.

@EloMall My suspicion is that it’s much more common with popular writers of history who can’t read certain sources or are writing for production where they put out a book every other year or something

People who try to normalise using AI for writing keep comparing it to using human research assistants and I feel we've gone through the looking glass to some strange and sinister land. You mean people seriously let assistants summarise articles and books for them and then base their work on those summaries? Without actually reading the sources themselves? Seriously?

@SketchesbyBoze I see hopeful signs everywhere lately...young people turning to analogue, to reading old books, writing on paper etc.

We are in desperate need of a new Romantic movement, a cultural rejection of slop and tech that facilitates cognitive collapse. You need to be reading great books. You need to be shunning intellectual shortcuts. You need to be perpetually pursuing your own education.

A huge problem in our culture is that you’re seen as an embarrassing loser if you have taste, intellectual standards or take any pride in your work. Journalists brag about using AI. Reading at all is deemed pretentious. We have completely given up on the life of the mind.

@suzania I'me starting to feel extremely tired of the general idea of ordering everything online...consciously trying to turn to exactly these options - if ordering then straight from publishers, but a trustworthy physical bookstores are the best (even if rare).

Made a day trip with the family to Powell's, City of Books, and came away with an excellent haul - William Morris, Burne-Jones, Walter Scott, Marcel Proust!

@EloMall @SketchesbyBoze That is a good point. There is no relationship between Tolkien and Robert E Howard, or , I think Lord Dunsany or E R Eddison. Even Andre Norton seems untouched by him in her post LOTR phase. The derivative works are another thing entirely.

I find it annoying when people say Tolkien is the greatest fantasy writer because Tolkien himself would never make such a claim. He would have you reading Beowulf, the Gawain Poet, the Sagas, the Eddas. You love Tolkien's work because he draws on a vast body of older literature.
