Two titans of Canadian literature in conversation for our first #BookTalk event of 2026 at @unionhotelto last night.
@susanswanauthor interviewed @jane_urquhart - one of the greatest writers of our times - about her novel 'In Winter I Get Up at Night', a bold and deeply moving work of imagination and self-inquiry
Bit h/t to @katherineashenburg for the question and answer

After a long, long wait, my new book, The Hidden Hand, is out next week. Pretty excited about that.
It's been out in E-book form for a few weeks, yes. And I know lots of people prefer the e-book format. But there is something cool about seeing it the traditional way. It's intangibly tangible.
The book grew out of my journalism and columnizing at Postmedia. Out of that grew our documentary, The Campaign, which is about to get its debut on the worldwide festival circuit.
But all of it grew out of a hunch. I had been observing the forces of antisemitism and bigotry for many, many years. They were losers, all of them, and their side kept losing. After the terrible events of October 7, 2023, however, I saw a dramatic change online and in the streets. The haters had gotten their act together.
What I saw was much like the political campaigns that I have run or help to run over many years. It had tested messaging, trained people, media-savvy leaders, lots of money and – most of all – a strategy. A strategy to demonize and the legitimize Jews, the Jewish state and Western democracy. And it was winning.
That's what The Hidden Hand is about: a global propaganda campaign that is malevolent, dishonest and highly, highly effective. It is still winning.
I will be doing lots of media starting bright and early Monday. There'll be lots of (secure) bookstore signings and speaking events, too. I hope to meet all of you along the way. I think it's a book with a message worth considering.
Less than a week to go. Excited.

Nick Cave on the current moment facing the arts and artists. Culture should be 'a space for free-ranging and diverse ideas, a place of vitality and originality that encourages disagreement and good faith debate, (but that) is being sucked down the sinkhole of a single monolithic ideology — one voice, one cause, one dissent.

An outstanding year for Canadian writers and the @GillerPrize! Four of the five shortlisted titles are national bestsellers, and two landed on the @nytimes bestsellers list. Kudos to the jury for selecting these titles and congrats to the writers!

The @gillerprize is about so much more than one night a year. We promote Canadian authors and books year- round with our #cravingcanlit page; the Between the Pages tour takes authors across the country; the Giller Mantella BIPOC scholarship provides much-needed financial assistance to aspiring writers; our brand new #booktalk series in collab with @unionhotelto presents writers in an intimate setting devoted to local arts and culture, and our outreach into Canadian Colleges and Universities have resulted in Giller Prize courses.
The Giller Prize is so much more than just one night a year!
