🚨New Publication!🚨 In a special issue of Defence Studies, I discuss with Stéfanie von Hlatky the impact of Trump’s election on NATO nuclear deterrence and disarmament policies: doi.org/10.1080/147024…

There’s a world of difference between acknowledging the selectiveness of intl norms and actively cheering and supporting its destruction. The former while calibrating behaviour is pragmatic and realistic, the latter, on the other hand, is inherently self-defeating.

This attack is illegal under U.S. law and under international law. The Constitution says Congress declares war, not the president.  He needed consent from Congress. This is also a violation of the UN Charter, as Iran did not attack the United States. cbsnews.com/live-updates/i…

They may be weak, or getting weaker, but that is not a unidirectional process and norms can be both weakened and strengthened. If we take the US threat to 🇨🇦 sovereignty seriously, then we should be wary of supporting *any* action that undermines this specific norm.

I really disagree with the notion that opposing US action would get Canada nothing *in the long run*. Seems to me like people are over-correcting after the Davos speech by assuming we live in a completely norms-free world, whereas norms still exist.
JMDavis@JessMarinDavis

Two things: a) Vocally opposing the US's action gets Canada nothing, so this tepid support makes sense. b) The real support is in action, not words. I doubt we'll see any assets, resources, or tools deployed to support the US-Iran war.

The real trouble with Carney’s « realism » is that it could really be also branded unsophisticated and short-term opportunism. Scoring points by appeasing the US but doing so by weakening sovereignty norms isn’t the most brilliant long-term trade I’ve ever seen.
Thomas Juneau@thomasjuneau

You misunderstood parts of Carney's Davos speech. It was a call to realism and to put Canada's more narrowly defined interests ahead of universalist principles (which we have too often failed to do in the past). Deal with the world as it is, not as you wished it were.

@MarkKersten There is no wider appetite whatsoever within the Canadian government for Eyre’s suggestion, so I wouldn’t take this as a real sign that the govt is moving in this direction.

@SevaUT if the price to pay for it is to hear constantly about the “carney doctrine”, then so be it

@MrMaitra I mean, one could make a good argument that this is precisely what the US is doing by giving support to Ukraine and using it as a proxy to “bloodlet” Russia.

@MrMaitra Tragedy quite explicitly states that regional hegemons, once established, have as one of their only goals preventing other hegemons from emerging in other regions. By this logic, the US *should* oppose Russian expansionism.

#Ukraine #Russie #Trump #Poutine

the median voter (my mother) loves Carney because she thinks he’s successful and he’ll work his magic to save of us all, I really don’t think the Tories will get her support with this strategy

attacking a prime minister over his wealth and assets after he waltzed into office in big part because he’s believed to be a financial wizard sure seems like an interesting strategy to me, let’s see how it pans out
