We support it, we’re upset about it, we think it’s bad, but also, we might join in. -PM Mark Carney, the last 72 hours

PM Mark Carney says the U.S.-Israel war against Iran is a failure of the international order. "The current conflict is another example of the failure of the international order." "The United States and Israel have acted without engaging the United Nations or consulting allies, including Canada."

Two things: a) Vocally opposing the US's action gets Canada nothing, so this tepid support makes sense. b) The real support is in action, not words. I doubt we'll see any assets, resources, or tools deployed to support the US-Iran war.

You misunderstood parts of Carney's Davos speech. It was a call to realism and to put Canada's more narrowly defined interests ahead of universalist principles (which we have too often failed to do in the past). Deal with the world as it is, not as you wished it were.

Carney wrote his own speech, per official. It is unusual for a leader to do so for a major speech, normally they give input & have 1 or more speech-writers do it. Although it's quite clear this is Carney through and through to anyone who's been listening to him.
