Seven years ago today our little girl ran out of fight. Only minutes after the fourth assault that week, Emily took her own life 💔 My baby, we would give the world for just one hug, for you to bounce through the door into our arms. We love you & ache for you each& every day💔💗

Ten painful years without our beautiful girl 💔 and yet it feels like only yesterday that we cuddled in the kitchen and you squeezed me tighter than ever before. I thought you were just missing us, but now I realise it was much more than that 💔💗 I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve closed my eyes and held my arms out pretending you’re filling them, wishing with all my heart that we were in that moment again. If I’d only known what that extra squeeze meant, if I’d known what you were being subjected to, I would never have let you go 💔 My baby, you are saving so many others from going through what you did 💗 We always knew you’d make such a difference in this world, we just wish it wasn’t in this way 💔 Love you so much Emily Pemily, to the moon and back 💗💔💗 xxx #domesticabuse #liabilityforsuicide #EndGBV

At last - the first case in Scotland where an abuser is convicted of killing his wife after she takes her own life 💔 So many women are driven to the point of feeling living isn’t an option, feeling the abuse and pain will never end. Abusers know what they are doing, they see they are killing a person yet choose to continue. Until now they did that with no consequences but hopefully no longer! So sorry this has happened, another beautiful life taken - thinking of Kimberley and her loved ones 💔 news.stv.tv/north/abuser-c…

Domestic abuse related suicides have been hidden for far too long. Good to see @guardian spotlight families pushing for real justice. These are homicides where perpetrators walk free, carrying on with their lives regardless. The real sentence is served by the victims and the families left behind. Change cannot wait - we need to keep fighting for loved ones that would still be here if it wasn't for the men that so cruelly and determinedly destroyed them 💔 Revealed: The true toll of female suicides in UK with domestic abuse at their core | Domestic violence | The Guardian

This year marks 10 painful and long years since we lost Emily 💔Recently I've found myself reflecting on the challenges we've been through trying to ensure no other young person finds themselves in Emily's shoes. While some universities and colleges, particularly those we work closely with, have taken important and significant steps forward, many have yet to embed meaningful and lasting change. That's why I brought forward this amendment to the Tertiary Education & Training Bill. As we learned as a family, relying on moral obligation alone is not enough. This legislation will ensure no student in Scotland is disadvantaged because of where they study. I'm delighted to see the commitment from @scotgov Ben MacPherson, the Minister for Further and Higher Education. Also value the support from @PamGosalMSP. The challenge now is to ensure Scottish Funding Council reporting requirements are robust enough to deliver tangible and meaningful change in GBV prevention, intervention and support 🩷

Gender-based violence is an epidemic in many of our universities. Almost 10 years ago, Emily Drouet took her own life after being abused while living in the University of Aberdeen halls. I was pleased to have worked with Emily's mum - Fiona from @Emilytest12 - and with the Minister for Higher and Further Education to develop an amendment which would ensure that higher and further education institutions have in place policies that combat this terrible form of violence.

Gender-based violence remains a major issue in higher and further education. That is why after speaking to Fiona Drouet from @Emilytest12 I introduced an amendments to the Tertiary Education and Training (Funding and Governance) (Scotland) Bill which would ensure that institutions of higher and further education have in place policies to combat this violence. Fiona's daughter, Emily, committed suicide after being abused by her partner who lived in the same University halls as her. Had the University know about this, her life could have been saved. I was pleased to hear that the Minister is wishing to engage further with me to ensure that there are policies in place which eliminate gender-based violence in tertiary education.

LAST CHANCE to register for our fifth annual GBV Conference this Thursday in Edinburgh! We are delighted to be welcoming valued colleagues from a large number of Universities and Colleges in Scotland and England 💗 We will be sharing good practice through case studies followed by group discussions - helping us all collectively address common challenges. We will also have workshops from the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS) and RESPECT, helping us understand how to work responsibly with responding students. At a time when the sector faces financial challenges, it’s imperative we work together! Looking forward to seeing you there! 💗eventbrite.co.uk/e/emilytest-gb…

After my civil rape case an article was written by a lecturer at @AbertayUni Stuart Waiton detailed that the evidence heard in court about my rape was “a drunken night that ended in sex”. “That the scales of justice are unbalanced in an attempt to ‘find closure’ for victims”.

We understand that freedom of speech and critical thinking are essential components of a robust education system, encouraging intellectual growth, and nuanced understanding. However, institutions must balance these values with trauma-informed practices, considering the potential impact on all individuals involved, including victims/survivors and those who are, or could be, perpetrators. Before platforming controversial speakers, we must thoughtfully assess the potential consequences and explore alternative approaches that promote critical thinking while prioritising the well-being and safety of all members of our community.

If there's an abuser in your friend group and you choose to stay out of it and not "pick sides", then you picked a side. You fostered a space that was safe for someone to abuse others, a space that says, "You are welcome to hurt people here."
