At least Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil series was structured like a reimagining with clear lines to the source material. It was recognizably Resident Evil, like an AU of the games. Much more fitting tone, too. But this? Just some horror movie.

Hollywood adaptations have to be the most cynical art form there is. Every game-movie adaptation is just hoping you'll see it because it says That Thing You Like on the poster. They rarely even try to actually "adapt" any aspect of the source material other than loose references.
