GM 👋 A story broke this week that every one of us should be watching, and it reached a boiling point today. 📚 We usually keep it short, but Cisco just broke the internet so pull up a chair: On February 25, Cisco revealed that a highly sophisticated group has been living inside their "secure" systems for three years. The situation is so severe that the U.S. government (CISA) issued an Emergency Directive, giving federal agencies until 5:00 PM yesterday to patch their systems or pull them offline. It comes down to a fundamental flaw in traditional Web2 architecture: the Single Point of Failure - a topic we touch on a lot at PAW. ☝️ In these systems, there is a central "controller" that holds all the power. 🔐 Once hackers tricked the system into giving them access, they became the ultimate authority. They were able to "roll back" the software to an older, broken version to hide their activity and then erase the digital logs that would have sounded the alarm. When you can simply delete the evidence of a crime, true security is impossible. For three years, these intruders had a "Master Key" to global networks, and nobody knew because the central brain was compromised. 🗝️ If you’ve been following our blog updates, you know we talk about "Trust Layers" and "Immutable Ledgers." This crisis is the exact reason those features are no longer optional for enterprises. In the PAW ecosystem, you can’t just "roll back" software to hide a hack. 🧾 We are building our Subnets to anchor their status to our blockchain ledger. The result is a permanent, cryptographic receipt of what the system must look like. If an attacker tries to change the version, the math won't add up, and the network will reject the change instantly. ❌ 🧠 Cisco’s version of a network relies on a central brain to manage everything. If that brain is tricked, every branch and office is compromised at once. Our Next Era of PAW blog recently introduced Sovereign Subnets which are a total rethink of this: A Sovereign Subnet is its own isolated environment with its own rules. Even if one part of a network is targeted it does not grant a Master Key to everything else. You are moving from one vulnerable center to a network of independent high security lanes. 🧬 We are already working to move beyond fragile passwords. We aim to ensure that administrative power stays with the actual owner and not a remote attacker by integrating biometric entropy markers like fingerprints into the security process. The Cisco exploit happened because the world currently relies on "trusting" a central authority. We are building a foundation where you don't have to 'trust' that a system is secure - you verify it yourself, in real-time, on the ledger. Today’s government alerts are the proof that the old way is broken, and our roadmap is the way forward.
