We are excited to announce that we have renewed our pitchside sponsorship at @OllertonTownCFC for a 4th season! The club has been on a rollercoaster ride since they became the 1st club we visited for the blog in 2020, & we are delighted to continue to support them next season
Ollerton Town FC@OllertonTownCFC

A big thank you to @EmmaGroundGuide who have kindly continued their pitchside sponsorship for the 2025-2026 season. Emma's Ground Guide is a non-league blog with a difference, ran by couple Emma and Max. Be sure to check their page out but ignore their review of our ground! 😉

@EmmaGroundGuide "more and more" There are 176 step 4 clubs. How many have resigned this summer? 2 or 3? I'm not convinced there's anything at all unusual about this, happens every season I think.

Brighouse Town dropping from step 4 to step 7 We are seeing more and more of this as clubs struggle to keep up with the ridiculous spending in #nonleague Sadly I can see it getting worse before it gets better as clubs chase the dream then the money runs out
Brighouse Town AFC@brighousetownfc

Club Statement | 6th May 2026 𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐄 𝐓𝐎𝐖𝐍 𝐅𝐂 𝐇𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐒𝐭 𝐆𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝, 𝐇𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐝𝐠𝐞, 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞. 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐇𝐃𝟔 𝟐𝐏𝐋 Brighouse Town AFC has taken the decision to request a realignment in the non-league football structure and return to playing at an amateur level at Step 7 of the Football League Non-league pyramid. The hope is to be accepted into the West Yorkshire Association Football League. Dialogue has already begun with the management committee of this league and there has been a very positive response and reaction to our plans. We have notified the Northern Premier League and the FA of our decision and await guidance on the formal process to enable this to happen. This is decision hasn’t been taken lightly but affords the men’s senior team a reset and a chance to re-establish itself and grow once again. The Club takes great pride in its rise from the former West Riding County Amateur League in 2008 to the Northern Counties League First Division and then gaining promotion to the Northern Counties Premier League in 2010. Promotion to the Northern Premier League – step 4 of the Non-League Football Pyramid was gained in 2014 where it has remained up until this season. We have often said we felt we were batting above our station, but we have had a great ride and some fantastic memories and friendships made. Spiralling wage, travel, infra-structure and administrative costs along with the loss of key experience at a senior level have caused a strategic re-appraisal and need for re-alignment. Mark Booth has stepped forward to take the role of Chairperson of the whole club, and he will be ably assisted by Julian Prior as Secretary along with existing members of the Club’s committee. The Junior and Women’s sections are unaffected and continue to grow, and this decision will allow the whole club the chance to move forward as a united entity. Although this is the end of one era, it is the start of a new one. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to our supporters, volunteers, and partners for their continued backing. We hope you will remain with us on this journey as we build the next chapter of Brighouse Town AFC and continue to provide a football hub that the town can be proud of. Brighouse Town AFC Executive Committee.

@SipsonGary @RetfordUnited Again this wasn’t a personal dig at Retford…..you just happen to be the club in this example Lots of clubs do it but that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing

@EmmaGroundGuide @RetfordUnited But Retford didn't do a Stockport, they signed Oli Wilson when Lewis Chambers got injured and Wilson played a few games for Retford prior to the playoffs

@SipsonGary @RetfordUnited I’ve got nothing against Retford United, that tweet is just a perfect example of how players can just jump from club to club for important games moving up and down multiple steps Imagine Stockport signing a couple of Man City players to win them the league 1 play offs

@EmmaGroundGuide I think a bigger problem is when a player gets a ban at step 3 or 4, he can see out his ban playing for a step 5 or 6 club. It seems a ridiculous loop hole that needs closing.

@Lufc_81 @Horbury_TownFC I made this exact point about Brighouse yesterday. You try and run it properly and sustainably just to be overtaken by clubs with a money man throwing cash at it You get nothing for running your club properly and breaking even

@EmmaGroundGuide It’s embarrassing that these lower leagues can do deals all the way through. Take @Horbury_TownFC as an example, run on a tiny budget & have been competitive, but how can a club run the RIGHT way compete with teams allowed to bring in HUGE wage players all season.

@rjbrook76 I’ve never liked the idea of reprieves If you finish a full season in the relegation zone you deserve to go down, and sometimes going down a step and winning more games is the better option anyway

@EmmaGroundGuide If only they hadn't been reprieved the last 2 seasons it might not have come to this. They definitely signed players this year from divisions below so could tell they were gonna struggle but said it would do them good to rebuild from NCEL but down to step 7 is a big step down

@EmmaGroundGuide In fairness it's Step 5 to Step 7 as they had been relegated anyway. For the fourth year in a row, can't imagine that's helped their cause at all

@wardscoaching ‘Struggling to keep up with the ridiculous spending’ As in other clubs spending so much means clubs like Brighouse can’t compete without risking the future of the club and are forced into decisions like this

@UpTheWakes @andrewp538 You and rugby town this season sum up the state of non league at the moment 2 ‘proper’ clubs that are well backed by their communities and get good crowds but it’s not enough when other clubs with a big backer can just throw money at their squad

@andrewp538 @EmmaGroundGuide Can’t argue with that, the grants are there for those but need that strong commitment from a select few to go through the long process and then as you say, fundraise at same time. Need a money man now to real kick on the field, unfortunately.

@kevinboor54 @UpTheWakes There are so many examples of clubs playing at terrible/aging grounds putting all their money into the squad for 1 season rather than the ground that will last a generation

@EmmaGroundGuide @UpTheWakes It's a real chicken and egg situation. I strongly believe that facilities should come first and team later. Reach the grading for your league and then have a sustainable budget for that level. Not all players play for £££'s. Your pitch/facilities are your biggest asset.

@tnekmail @UpTheWakes And you win nothing for being sustainable either Run it properly and break even and you just get overtaken by someone throwing thousands at it with a rich backer.

@tnekmail @UpTheWakes In an ideal world that bottom paragraph would be true. I’m not sure it is tho & that’s the problem Go up to step 4 and suddenly you’re hosting a team from Newcastle on a Tuesday night who bring 4 fans rather than the local derby you got at step 5 Not as if there’s prize money

@tnekmail The cynical side says you can see most years teams suddenly ‘struggle’ and miss out on promotion especially between step 5 and 4. When you look at the extra costs involved and what do you actually gain from promotion? Less local games, higher wages and often lower crowds

@EmmaGroundGuide ... Will teams deliberately sign weaker teams knowing they can't afford to go up? Or will we start to see more teams winning leagues but refusing promotion.

@tnekmail Problem is there is no way to police it at this level. Put a wage cap in and people will just be handing out brown envelopes in the clubhouse after the game It’s a shame but it happens at every level throughout the pyramid, and there’s no reward for being a well run club

@EmmaGroundGuide Either someone will try to step in over the next few weeks to put controls in place, which will probably be a mess, or the pyramid will naturally level itself out over time as clubs work out what they can afford. Do wonder how it will impact future promotion races though...
