On this day in 1919 Norfolk nurse and First World War heroine Edith Cavell was buried in her final resting place here at Norwich Cathedral. As we today remember Edith Cavell, we invite you to join us this October for a special Edith Cavell weekend honouring Edith’s life and legacy. Edith Cavell 110 will take place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October 2025 to mark the 110th anniversary of Edith’s death on October 12 1915. We’re delighted to welcome Paddington to the Cathedral Close! The famous marmalade-loving bear arrived today and can be found perched on a bench near the Cathedral’s Herb Garden waiting to meet visitors young and old. Paddington has taken up residence in Norwich thanks to the amazing efforts of @NorwichBIDUK and everyone from schoolchildren to shopkeepers who wrote heartfelt messages encouraging Paddington to pay a visit to our fine city. As a Cathedral of Sanctuary in a City of Sanctuary, we hope Paddington will feel very much at home here at Norwich Cathedral, and we hope everyone will enjoy meeting our newest resident! The special statue is one of 24 dotted around the UK and Ireland as part of the Paddington Visits trail celebrating the release of @StudiocanalUK’s Paddington in Peru movie. Thank you to our friends @Norfolkfire who joined us for an emergency training exercise at Norwich Cathedral last night (7 Nov). Seven fire appliances, the aerial ladder platform, a water carrier, fire crews and senior officers were dispatched to the Cathedral in a mock situation where a fire had started in the sound room beneath the organ. The exercise tested both the Cathedral and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service’s rescue plans, and how these plans would work together during an incident both to save the building from fire and to salvage artefacts within it. We are incredibly grateful to Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service for all they do to help keep Norwich Cathedral and the whole county of Norfolk safe. Our Organ Reborn! 2024 Festival kicked off in spectacular style with over 120 singers from three Cathedral Choirs performing in concert on Saturday night! Some rain is currently forecast for later this evening, so if you’re coming to the show, be sure to bring a raincoat – the show continues in all but the very worst weather! We were delighted to welcome HRH The Duke of Edinburgh to Norwich Cathedral for a tour of the rebuilt organ and to join us for Evensong last Thursday ahead of the Organ Reborn! 2024 Festival starting this coming weekend. The Duke was the Patron of the They Shall Laugh and Sing Music Appeal which raised the £1.8m needed to fund the major rebuild of the organ and ensure people could enjoy its music long into the future. His Royal Highness is currently Patron of The Statham Society, an organisation set up to help further musical opportunities at Norwich Cathedral.
