I’m very grateful for this recognition of Torn Apart—mostly because I hope it will bring more scholarly & public attention to the people the family policing system harms & their growing movement to abolish it, reimagine safety & build a caring world. @BasicBooks @SociologyatPenn

@CarnegieMellon As an alum, I'm disappointed in this statement. It fails to acknowledge the harms of colonialism and encourages the racist and sexist attacks against Prof. Anya that are already happening. Delete this.

Many of us are both kinds of people. I’ve worked very hard to pay off nearly $50k in student debt, and I still have a lot left. Canceling the remainder would be life changing.

As @micahinATL and others point out, “fairness” shouldn’t mean equal suffering, and the distribution of debt is racialized and gendered to begin with. The world also isn’t neatly divided into hardworking people who paid off loans/never needed them and “lazy” people who won’t. 1/

The IRS said it will be requiring Americans to submit selfies to a third party company, ID.me, for facial recognition scans in order to access our taxes online. This is deeply troubling for a number of reasons. mic.com/impact/tax-fil…

I ran into this issue because I live in an English basement. Backend database issues point to bigger design failures: failing to account for people who live in multi-unit housing, have households bigger than four people, don’t have addresses, or don’t have internet to sign up.

It bothers me the way everything is now “human-centered AI”, but this line of research rarely engages with practices of participatory research or critical reflexivity.
