And talking of employment rights, this doesn’t even touch on the other benefits PhD researchers lose out on because they lack employment status!

To follow up on this, I expect there will be an increase to stipend levels in October 2025 that will reduce this gap (I’m less certain whether it’ll be eliminated). Anyway, yet again it shows how precarious PhDs are without full employment rights

With #Budget2024 confirming an increase in minimum wage I've updated my chart of UKRI minimum PhD stipends. From next April, PhD students in the UK will be around £1400 a year worse off than if they worked 37.5 hours a week on minimum wage

This was a great article to work on - I had some absolutely fascinating conversations about the breadth of chemical endeavour, the evolution of various sectors over time, and the challenges ahead for the future. Hoping the next 10 will be equally interesting and inspirational

It's been 20 years since Chemistry World first went into print. How has the world of chemistry changed in that time? @broadwithp asked chemists who became members of @RoySocChem in 2004 to look back at the last two decades of their careers! chemistryworld.com/20-years-20-ch…

1 June marked 50 years since a major explosion at a chemical plant in North Lincs took the lives of 28 employees. The Flixborough disaster shook the chemical industry but led to improvements in process safety that have, no doubt, saved many lives since: chemistryworld.com/news/fire-and-…
