Lol, just last week you were preaching that we "need to respect both of them." That sermon was the surrender of a Ronaldo fan who was bracing for the possibility of Messi winning a 2nd World Cup. Nothing will touch Messi's legacy. Among people who don't live on conspiracy theories like Ronaldo fans, the consensus is clear: they know who the greatest player is. What Ronaldo fans have done is project their frustration with Ronaldo's colossal failure onto Messi. You can't accept that a player who once dominated goalscoring as Ronaldo could decline so dramatically. You can't cope with the fact that a once-colossal athlete has become a peripheral figure whom even his national teammates consider a parasitic appendage. You expected both players, after two decades of rivalry, to fade together. That way, Ronaldo's legacy would remain psychologically insulated. But Messi refused to. As Ronaldo declined to the point of being unceremoniously pushed out of his boyhood club; Messi produced one of the greatest World Cup campaigns ever and lifted the trophy. That triumph earned him another Ballon d'Or while Ronaldo was busy celebrating a Dubai-based award in the very Saudi league he once insisted he would never play in. Ronaldo then lost three consecutive league titles in Saudi Arabia while Messi took a struggling MLS side to multiple trophies. The spotlight they once shared shifted entirely to Messi. For many Ronaldo fans, whose image of him is frozen in 2018 highlight compilations, that was unbearable. So the conspiracy theories began. The World Cup had to be rigged. FIFA had to be helping Messi. His first MLS free kick had to be scripted. His Balon D'or had to be rigged. His FIFA Best had to be rigged. Every achievement required an explanation other than brilliance. He may have lost this final, but no serious football fan, manager, player, or pundit will place any player, living or dead, above him. Messi, at 39, competed against the three best young stars and took his team to the final in the World Cup. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has faded from the conversation and leaves the World Cup with only one knockout and zero MVPs in the 21 tournaments. At the end of the day, Messi remains the 39-year-old who competed with the world's best young stars, a World Cup winner the most decorated footballer in history the most prolific players ever the most awarded player, and the most naturally gifted player the game has seen. Ronaldo? A captain whose own teammates have publicly called "just another player," who will leave football without the ultimate prize worthy of a great.

You can call it whatever you want to call it, but we were all watching. The world was watching history, and history will not be kind to Argentina. It will not be kind to Lionel Messi either. This is a stain on his entire legacy and reputation. For decades, they have tried to tell those of us who have been pointing this out that we are crazy. But over and over again, we keep seeing the same thing happen. The bias was undeniable. First of all, what a disgraceful refereeing performance. That was clearly biased refereeing. Argentina should have had five red cards by 70th minute. Foul after foul after foul after foul, yet the referee refused to punish them. What more did Leandro Paredes have to do before he got a red card in that game? The refereeing was disgraceful. Spain’s first goal was cancelled for absolutely no reason. But here I am again, saying what we’ve seen time and time again. How many times has Messi come to the biggest stage and delivered absolutely nothing? A stinker of a performance. Zero shots, zero attempts on target, all the way until the second period of extra time, after Spain had already scored. Woeful performance. Absolutely rubbish. He can never be the greatest footballer in football history. We know these things. We are not confused. We know what we watched. Fraudulent GOAT.
