Mainz terminated his contract in 2023 citing his pro-Palestine posts. However, the courts ruled that the termination was invalid, evaluating it within the scope of freedom of expression. Despite losing twice, the club made a final appeal to Germany’s Federal Labor Court, but this appeal was also rejected. The ruling is now final, and there is no higher authority left for Mainz to appeal. With this decision, the club’s obligation to pay compensation and outstanding wages to El Ghazi has been confirmed.
