Pele, Maradona, Messi and Zidane won world cups as star players and it helps their legacy. Everyone across generations knows Pele and Maradona. Cruyff was the best player in the world in the 1970s. He took Netherlands to WC final in 1974. Won 3 ballon d'ors. etc But many people of this generation don't know him or talk about him. If he had won that 1974 WC, he would likely have got more "streethold" popularity close to Maradona at least. This is what winning WC and being the star of it does to a player. We cannot say it was because 1970s were far. Pele's reign was older than that and he is still a "streethold" name in football today. Not winning WC did not help Cruyff's legacy outside of elite football enthusiasts. Ronaldo's may not be that bad in 50 years' time but he stands the risk too without WC.
