I’m here for the poppies at the moment; in their vast swathes and little clumps. #Pompeii

A mosaic from the entrance to the Roman baths in Timgad, Algeria, inviting you to swap your sandals for a pair with wooden soles that protected feet against the heated floors ..and then 'Bene lava' – 'Wash well!' c.2nd century AD, 📷by me at Timgad Museum.

Ancient marble gravestone for a dog named Parthenope, shown on the memorial relaxing on a fine couch. The epitaph tells us that: 'Here an owner has buried his playful dog, Parthenope, in gratitude for the happiness and mutual love that she brought him.' Parthenope then addresses us directly: 'Having been a friend to my owner, I deserved this grave. Take the example of this memorial, and find yourself a loyal friend who is both ready to love you while you are alive and also care for you when you die.' Roman era, 3rd century AD. From the acropolis of Mytilene, once an islet just off the shore of Lesbos but now connected to the larger island. Istanbul Archaeological Museum.
