The Answer to Pressure: Israel faces constant pressure from allies with conflicting interests. The temptation is to compromise early, hoping it eases the tension. But in this 1989 conversation, the Lubavitcher Rebbe offered a counterintuitive approach: The key isn’t managing external pressure—it’s Israel’s internal clarity. President Bush was urging Prime Minister Yitzchak Shamir to make concessions that would compromise Israeli security. His cabinet secretary, Elyakim Rubinstein, sought the Rebbe’s counsel before critical meetings in Washington. The Rebbe advice: Stand firm. Not from stubbornness, but from clarity. When Israel presents its security needs as non-negotiable matters of survival, it strengthens partnerships — particularly with the United States. Once compromise begins on survival, there’s no natural place to stop. Strength, clearly articulated, earns respect.
