The C-Rate: Charging Speed Ratio The ‘C’ in C-Rate stands for the battery’s charging rate, which is the ratio of the charging current to the battery’s capacity. A 0.5C rate indicates that the current used to charge the battery is half of its total capacity. For example, if a battery has a capacity of 304 Ah, a 0.5C charging rate would be 152 A. If the capacity decreases to 280 Ah, the charging current at 0.5C would be 140 A. The P-Rate: Power Delivery Ratio The ‘P’ in P-Rate stands for power, and it’s a measure of the battery’s power output relative to its total energy capacity. The term ‘0.5P’ means the battery is delivering power at half of its maximum capacity. For instance, if a battery’s energy capacity is 1004.8 Wh and it’s being charged or discharged at 502.4 W, it’s operating at a 0.5P rate. Busbar Selection & Size Calculations (IEC Made Easy) Busbars look like simple copper or aluminum bars—but choosing the right size is about temperature rise, short-circuit withstand, and mechanical forces, not just “amps on a nameplate.” Here’s a practical way to do it 👇 🧠 1) Define the job 🧰 Assembly standard: IEC 61439-1/-2 (LV switchgear and controlgear assemblies) 🧵 Conductor basics: IEC 60228 (conductor classes, cross-sections) 🌡 Current capacity & derating: IEC 60364-5-52 🔥 Thermal short-circuit check (adiabatic): IEC 60949 ♨️ Temperature-rise calc method (when not tested): IEC 60890 🔢 2) Find the design current (Ib) Use the 3-phase power formula: P = √3 × V × I × cosφ → I = P / (√3 × V × cosφ) Example (mixed load): 500 kW on 400 V, PF = 0.9 I = 500000 / (1.732 × 400 × 0.9) = 801 A → Ib = 801 A 🌡 3) Apply derating (IEC 60364-5-52) Conditions reduce capacity; compensate upwards. Say ambient is 50 °C and your factor is 0.90: I_required = Ib / 0.90 = 801 / 0.90 = 890 A (Use the exact factors for ambient, enclosure/grouping, altitude per IEC 60364-5-52 or manufacturer tables.) 📏 4) Pre-select a busbar cross-section Start with a practical current density, then verify by temperature-rise: Typical starting points (enclosed LV, Cu): 1.6–2.5 A/mm² S_pre = I_required / J With I_required = 890 A and J = 1.6 A/mm² → S_pre ≈ 556 mm² Pick a standard build, e.g. 2 × (40 × 8) mm Cu per phase → 640 mm². ⚖️ Now verify temperature rise per IEC 61439 (design verification by test or by IEC 60890 calculation/manufacturer data). Current-density is just a starting point. 🔥 5) Thermal short-circuit check (IEC 60949) Use the adiabatic formula: S ≥ I_k × √t / k I_k = RMS short-circuit current at the busbars t = protection clearing time k = material/temp constant from IEC 60949 tables (depends on Cu/Al and permissible temperature rise) Example: assume I_k = 50 kA, t = 1 s, k (bare Cu, per IEC 60949 table) S_req = 50,000 × √1 / k → (with the correct k from IEC 60949) ≈ ~220 mm² (typical for Cu). Our 640 mm² busbar passes easily. (Always use the exact k from IEC 60949 Table for your material/temps.) 🧲 6) Dynamic (mechanical) withstand (IEC 61439) Faults create huge electrodynamic forces. Peak current I_pk ≈ κ × I_k (κ depends on X/R; LV often around 2.0–2.2—confirm for your system). Check supports, spacing, and bracing to withstand these forces per IEC 61439 and manufacturer limits. 🧮 Want to skip all the manual work?
