Every Lenten season, my neighbour becomes a different person. Normally, he’s the lively type—always joking, always playing music in the compound. But once Lent begins, everything about him slows down. One evening, he knocked on my door and said, “Come, let’s go for Stations of the Cross.” I hesitated. I had heard about it, but I had never really taken it seriously. Still, I followed him. When we got to the church, it was quiet. People were already gathered, moving slowly from one station to another. At each stop, they paused, prayed, and reflected. At first, I didn’t really understand what was going on. We moved from one point to another, reading, kneeling, standing… repeating the same pattern. But somewhere along the way, something changed. At one of the stations, they talked about Jesus falling under the weight of the cross. I glanced at my neighbour—his head was bowed, eyes closed. And for some reason, it hit me. This wasn’t just about what happened years ago. It felt like a reminder of the struggles we all carry every day—the pressure, the disappointments, the silent battles no one sees. As we continued, I started paying more attention. Each station felt personal. Each prayer felt heavier. By the time we got to the end, the whole place was silent. No noise, no distractions—just people thinking, reflecting. On our way back home, my neighbour didn’t say much. That was unusual for him. After a while, he finally spoke. He said, “You see why I don’t joke with this period? It helps me reset.” I didn’t reply immediately. Because deep down, I understood what he meant. Sometimes, in the middle of all the noise of life… you need moments like that—to slow down, reflect, and face yourself. Since that day, whenever he knocks during Lent, I don’t hesitate. I just follow.

A Catholic priest who undergoes at least 10 years of rigorous spiritual, academic, and pastoral formation is who you are comparing to your “pastor” who spent a few months in discipleship school or whatever you choose to call it? Perhaps it’s time to remind you that the very reason you celebrate Easter on the 5th of April is because of the Catholic Church, the same church you spend all day criticizing. If you think the Catholic Church is “too boring,” then you are free to leave. The Church is not here to entertain you or to tell you only what you want to hear. If it’s excitement and feel-good messages you’re after, there are plenty of Protestant churches that will gladly provide that. But understand this clearly: if you reject the Eucharist,if you reject the Blessed Sacrament, you are rejecting Jesus Christ Himself. And that is the truth.

There is some interesting similarities and differences between Lazarus' resurrection and Jesus' resurrection. Both were buried in tombs covered with stones. Both were wrapped in burial clothes. This is how far the similarities could go. What about differences? Before Lazarus could be raised, the Lord told the people to remove the stone. After Lazarus was raised, the Lord asked people to untie him. I wondered why the same God who has power to call a dead man back to life couldn't just command the stones and clothes to move themselves. In Jesus' case, no human beings rolled the stone away and the burial cloths untied by themselves. Here is the deal; the resurrection of Lazarus required three forces; Power of God, Faith and Prayer. The Power of God resided with Jesus, but that power wasn't going to be released without faith and prayer. No wonder Jesus kept asking Martha and Mary to believe and see. Removing the stone and untying him are actions of faith because faith without good works is dead. Jesus' resurrection didn't require faith and prayer. All it needed was God's power. I don't want to go preachy on you this afternoon, but just to say that when we neglect to carry out the actions of faith in our pursuit for miracles, prayers will achieve little or nothing in releasing the power of God. When God decides to favor you with a miracle by his own power alone, your prayers and faith aren't needed. Ask the widow of Nain, Jairus' daughter and Peter's mother inlaw, they will tell you.

Someone drew my attention to this video of a Catholic lady who is complaining of feeling empty after returning from Mass. Her emptiness is coming from the fact that the priest did not break the Word of God well. 1. Acknowledgement: First, I must commend the lady for speaking up. It is possible that there are other Catholics who feel the same way but have not been courageous enough to make their feelings known either privately or publicly as this lady chose to. 2. The Mass is first a sacrifice, not a performance: Second and very importantly, let me state clearly that at its core, the Holy Mass is the re-presentation of Christ’s sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary, not a lecture or motivational talk. If the focus shifts only to how inspiring or motivational the priest is in his homily, we risk misunderstanding what the Mass truly is. 3. The Eucharist is the true nourishment: In the Gospel according to John, Jesus teaches that His Body and Blood are true food and drink. Even if the homily is weak from our human perspective, Christ is still fully present - Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. No Mass is spiritually “empty” where the Eucharist is received with faith. 3. However, homily does matter: The Church teaches that the homily is an integral part of the liturgy. Priests have a real responsibility to break open the Word of God in a way that nourishes the faithful. Poor preaching can indeed make it harder for people to connect and grow. 4. Ongoing formation for priests is important: The lady's suggestion about ongoing pastoral formation is not misplaced. Priests should continually grow - in Scripture, theology, and communication skills. The people of God deserve preaching that is clear, faithful, and relevant. 5. But spiritual fruit also depends on disposition: Let it be made clear also that the grace we receive at Mass is not automatic in its fruits. Interior preparation matters: arriving to Mass early and saying a prayer before Mass, recollection, openness of heart. Sometimes “emptiness” is not only about what is given, but also about how it is received. Recall the parable of the sower in the Gospel. 6. Faith is not always felt: The other thing to keep in mind is that spiritual life is not built on feelings alone. There are moments of consolation and moments of dryness. The saints often experienced “emptiness” even in deep union with God. Lack of emotional satisfaction does not always mean lack of grace or poor homily quality. 7. The danger of a consumer mentality: When we begin to evaluate the Mass primarily by how it “made me feel,” we risk approaching it like a product rather than a mystery (this is one of the dangers of pentecostalism). The liturgy is not centered on us, but on God. 8. A call to deeper participation: I think the video calls all of us, without exception, to a deeper and active participation. Active participation is interior: preparation, listening, offering oneself, uniting one’s life to Christ’s sacrifice. When this happens, we will know that every Mass can be profoundly nourishing. 9. In Summary: Let me mention again that he lady's concern is valid - priests must strive to prepare, preach well, and communicate the Gospel effectively. But at the same time, the fullness of the Mass cannot be reduced to the 'quality' of a homily (let's also keep in mind that quality here is relative). Christ is always present and always giving Himself. The invitation is to meet Him there - with faith, disposition, preparation, and openness. Fr. Ugochukwu Ugwoke, ISch

I’ve noticed a pattern lately - some people seem to use the Catholic Church as content for engagement on the social media. Whenever their numbers drop, they suddenly have an opinion about the Church, and in most cases, the opinions are controversial. Faith is not a tool for mere impressions.

There’s no way you’ll listen to the Old Testament Readings, the responsorial psalms, the New Testament readings AND the Gospel and won’t feel overfed. Sometimes, these readings does a lot that I feel like I don’t need the Homily. Nne, your mind is in pentecostal. Go there.

@Teeniiola The same mass I went today? The Gospel was actually a long reading of the Lazarus story that was so self explanatory in itself. She doesn't even know what is her problem yet.
