I am deeply saddened by the news today of the passing of my friend Congressman Raul Grijlava. The Congressman was a towering and much beloved leader for southern Arizona and our nation. He was a true progressive, giving voice to those who had no voice or political power including our lands and waters. He led with intelligence, empathy and quiet strength. I was proud to have his support for my campaigns for Congress, and had looked forward to working side-by-side with him on legislation promoting education, workers' rights, combatting climate change, and recognizing the sovereignty of our native nations. My heartfelt condolences to his loving family on this sad day.

Despite the cold wind, the crowd just grew and grew as more and more faculty, staff and students joined what was truly a grassroots protest against the Trump/DOGE efforts to slash funding for scientific research. Call your rep at the AZ Legislature and Congress and tell them you want the USA to be #1 in curing disease, feeding the world, stopping climate change and mapping the universe! And whatever you do, heed the words of UA scientist @scott_saleska to the crowd today (quoting Yale historian Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny), “don’t obey in advance!”.

Wed evening veterans, doctors, educators, tribal leaders, farm and nutrition workers, church and non-profit staff serving refugees, therapists, park users and climate activists all lined up in a Phx HS auditorium to tell their stories of how the reckless Trump/Musk fed’l funding and workforce cuts are hurting Arizonans, harming our economy, our health and our schools while degrading our parks and public lands. Thank you to @AZAGMayes for organizing this Community Impact Town Hall and to OR AG Rayfield, MN AG Ellison, and NM AG Torrez for your work to hold the Trump administration accountable to the people and the law.

Folks, we need to get off the fence and face the reality that passing Prop 414 is necessary if we want the level of police, fire and shelter services we expect and which will maintain our reputation as a top destination to live, work, retire and recreate. During my congressional runs, City residents constantly voiced their concern about crime, homelessness, and increasing wait times in response to 911 calls. As @NikkiLeeAZ laid out in her excellent Feb. 28 Star op-ed, the City is extremely limited in its ability to shift funds from one “pot” to another, Ducey’s flat tax will reduce the City’s share of state tax revenues and due to Trump’s efforts to freeze and claw back fed’l grants, upwards of $280 million in fed’l funds for the City is at risk. No one likes a tax increase, and personally I would have allocated it a bit differently, but let’s not fool ourselves into thinking we can magically find $800 million for public safety in today’s fiscal environment. I'm voting Yes on 414 and I encourage you to do the same. Please remember your ballots need to be mailed back by today, otherwise you will need to vote in person next Tuesday.

At a time when Trump and Musk are turning our democracy into an oligarchy, promoting dictators, undercutting our allies, destroying our leadership in science, medicine and clean energy and his Republican sycophants in Congress are flooding social media with lies and propaganda, it was inspiring to join with pro-choice democratic women at the @ArizonaList Annual Celebration!

The anniversary of the tragic Jan 8th Tucson shooting always stings. I will never forget where I was - at a children’s playground- when those 18 people were shot and injured, including Gabby Giffords, and six were senselessly killed. So many common sense solutions to reduce gun violence, but such a lack of political will! Let’s try to turn that around in 2025.

I am heartbroken to hear the news about John McLean. He was an excellent advocate for Southern Arizona and an even better person. It was an honor to call him a friend. My thoughts are with his family during this extraordinarily difficult time.
