Cefas and @UK_CEH have been supporting the @caymangovt to identify the most pressing marine climate risks facing the Cayman Island's biodiversity, society & economy 🌊. This new assessment will help inform future climate policy & increase resilience. ▶️ bit.ly/3ZAJ6dF

@DrAngelaT @NickDulvy @WhySharksMatter ‘formosa’ is Latin for beautiful (feminine) but Formosa is also the old name for Taiwan, and many animals from the island have that species name. Masculine would be ‘formosus’ (handsome). ‘formosanum’ is neutral and can only mean ‘from Formosa=Taiwan’

@CefasGovUK and its predecessor @thembauk Fisheries Laboratory are 120 years old. Dialled-in from leave to hear @johnkpinnegar's talk on our fisheries history and what a joy it was. A few highlights [spoiler: we had women, timeseries matter, expertise matters] 🧵1/10

@RoyalTyrrell Well, it's a Greek word so you should follow Greek rules on syllables & accentuation. dip-LOW-doh-cuss since the final two vowels are short. This doesn't change with the Latin -us instead of -os.

Even among our own researchers, there is variation in how scientific names are pronounced. E.g., Diplodocus could be “dip-low-dock-us” or “duh-PLOD-uh-cuss” or even “dip-low-doh-cuss.” Is there a dinosaur name that you feel strongly should be pronounced a certain way?

@DingemanseLab On top of those points, it's also wasting everyone's time in a time where editors struggle to find reviewers...

For all the senior authors out there, know that it reflects, very, very, badly upon you when you let your students submit unreadble work full of spelling mistakes, and misinterpreted stats. I feel sorry for your students when I reject those papers but mostly I am upset with you
