Deeply saddened. He captured the soul of India through his heart and lens and set the gold standard for photography by freezing candid everyday moments for posterity. In the passing away of Raghu Rai Ji, photography has lost its most ardent and inspirational practitioner, guru and student. I will remember him as a good friend and a man of singular generosity of spirit. I had the privilege of knowing Raghu Ji for decades and remember, when I was a JS in the Ministry of Defence in the late 1990s, we needed an impressive cover for the Annual Report of the Ministry. We requisitioned Raghu Ji. Perfectionist that he was, he wanted to capture the firing of 155mm howitzer in the early morning with the first rays of the sun with the backdrop of the mountains and he produced a perfect snapshot. He also captured the conditions in which our soldiers serve in very cold terrains. That was the quality of the man, and the measure of his commitment to whatever he turned his lens to. His photographs of the survivors of Bhopal and of the Mother in Calcutta will remain etched in our memory. That he was the first Indian invited into Magnum, at Cartier-Bresson’s own hand, only confirmed what those who worked with him already knew. I offer heartfelt condolences to Gurmeet Ji and their family. Raghu Rai Ji will live in our memories forever. India, as he saw it, will live in his vast body of work till eternity. Rest in Peace, my friend.

Heartiest congratulations to a friend of long standing and a renowned economist, Dr. Ashok Lahiri Ji, on his appointment as the Vice-Chairman of Niti Aayog. We know each other for decades, going back to the time time when we used to walk our children to the bus stop of Rabindra Nagar for their school bus. We also interacted often during his stint as the member of the 15th Finance Commission. An alumnus of Presidency University, Kolkata, Dr. Lahiri has held research, teaching and senior positions at the Delhi School of Economics, the Asian Development Bank, Bandhan Bank, and the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, in addition to being India’s former Chief Economic Advisor. His appointment at the apex body, as India progresses towards being Viksit Bharat, is a recognition of the academic tradition of West Bengal. He brings focus on the three ‘N’s, NITI, Nishtha and Niyat with strong attention on "data-driven planning." Best wishes also to Shri Rajiv Gauba Ji, Prof. K. V. I express deepest gratitude to PM Sh @narendramodi Ji for a firm and visionary decision taken under his visionary leadership by the Union Cabinet for creation of ‘Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool’ (BMI pool) with a sovereign guarantee of Rs 12,980 crore to facilitate continuous maritime insurance coverages. With the Strait of Hormuz under sustained stress, today’s Cabinet approval of the Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool is a decisive step for India’s energy security. Backed by a ₹12,980 crore sovereign guarantee, the Pool keeps India’s crude, LPG and LNG cargoes insured through volatile maritime corridors even when external underwriters withdraw cover on grounds of sanctions or war risk. I would also like to thank my senior colleague @FinMinIndia Smt @nsitharaman Ji for this decision which will ensure continuity of cover for our oil and gas PSUs; continuity of supply for every Indian consumer. Deeply saddened at the passing away of Asha Bhosle Ji. One of the most successful, popular, and prolific singers of Indian cinema, whose captivating melodies kept several generations of music lovers spellbound. Asha Ji began singing professionally at the age of 9, recorded her first film song in 1943 and by the 1950s, had carved a niche for herself in Bollywood. Immensely talented and hugely popular, she was a seven-time winner of the Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Award and a two-time winner of the National Film Award- for musical gems like “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” from Umrao Jaan and “Mera Kuch Saamaan” from Ijaazat. Known for her range and versatility, Asha Ji’s work, in multiple languages, includes film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian Classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, Rabindra Sangeets and Nazrul Geetis. Her melodious voice will continue to live in the hearts of legions of her fans and admirers; and inspire upcoming singers and students of music. I offer heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
