It's not that the number of pages exceeded the page limits specifically. It's that the filings were lengthy and filled with vexatious and frivolous arguments such that it was unjust to expect X to respond to them. An easy way for the court to deal with this is to point to the page limitations being exceeded. But the real issue is the vexatious filings. It's kind of like busting Al Capone for tax evasion. Tax evasion is a real problem and we have rules against tax evasion because tax evasion is bad in itself. But we often bust people for tax evasion because it's easier than getting them for the thing we would really want to get them for even when that other thing is much worse than tax evasion. Much the same thing happened here. The page limits exist for a reason and one of those is that they provide an easy way to deal with voluminous and vexatious problems even though what we really are concerned about is not that the page limit was exceeded but the injustice of requiring a litigant to file motions and briefs without the benefit of a short and plain statement of exactly what they're being accused of.
